After the Video Game Crash of 1983 – spurred on by poorly made games, and an overabundance of different consoles – the general public was wary of video games in general, many stores outright refused to sell consoles. This was much less of a problem in Japan, where Nintendo had released its Family Computer, or 'Famicom' for short. The console (after a brief recall due to a bad chipset) was a hit, having sold 2.5 million systems by 1984. The Famicom was the beginning of a new era. It would go on to be the best selling game system of its time, despite having two permanently connected controllers, and helped to revitalize the damaged US video game market with its slightly modified Nintendo Entertainment System.
