Philips released the first CD-interactive player to the market in 1991. Short for "Compact Disc Interactive", content was initially largely relegated to educational and self help videos before Philips shifted focus to the increasingly lucrative videogame segment. The 300 series players consisted of both portable units with built-in displays and models that were integrated into television sets.
