Apple iPhone 5C

Verge Review

Silence isn’t very effective. That, more than anything, is the message of the iPhone 5C. In previous years, the arrival of a new iPhone was accompanied by the low-key repositioning of the previous model at a lower price tier — a strategy that allowed Apple to sell $99 iPhones, but didn’t allow the company to advertise them as new, interesting products. The old models sat with quiet pride in the corner of the Apple Store as people flocked in to see the latest magic from Cupertino, heralded...

Great screen resolution compared to my other devices. Apple's ecosystem offers a lot but it is way too closed for any user modifications. Size and feel of iPhone 5c are perfect fit for your tiny little hands, but that means also a compromise regarding the screen size (compared to my other devices) and regarding the type of battery. I assume that is the reason why the battery life is pretty bad for a device in this price category (I guess if I would not use all the options the phone provides and is made for the battery would last longer but I have to ask myself - why build a certain smartphone experience with all the options and not back it up with hardware that can support it?).

Personally I like the iPhone 5C. Reasons why I bought it was mainly that I like the fluidity of iOS and the color.

The plastic design of the iPhone 5C feels solid and high quality compared to most of the plastic phones out there. The colors are bright and really pop out from the black & white mass of smartphones. However the plastic doesn't seem to be very durable. I've dropped mine few times now and I can already see some damage in the plastic surface. It seems like even the glass of my previous iPhone 4 was more durable, except the plastic won't shatter like glass in the worst case scenario.

Display is nice and accurate. Colors look vibrant and natural and I can't really see any pixels. But to be honest, it's not a match to the best 1080p displays out there on Android phones.

Camera is exceptionally good even thought it's just a 8 mpx shooter. It takes some great pictures, fast and easy. The actual image quality isn't the best out there, but iOS camera software makes taking pictures pleasant.

Call quality is great. I've had some problems here and there, but I'm not confident if it's because of the phone or my carrier. Might be either of them or both.

Performance wise the phone is great. Apple made some good work with the software optimization, especially with iOS 7.1 which is now available for iPhone. I haven't had any lag or stuttering even while playing graphically intensive games. All my daily tasks can be done nice and easy.

Battery life is okay, but there is room for some improvement. Usually I can get the full day out of it, so it isn't really a problem. But if I happen to use my phone more than I usually do I will run out of battery sooner than I'd like to.

IPhone 5C is a great phone, and I would easily recommend it for anyone. However, personally I'm tempted to grab some of the high end Android hand sets out there. I'm in need of some change and I believe that Google's Nexus 5 or the HTC One (M8) would offer me more than the iPhone 5C.
