The OG, the phone that started it all. It was amazing in ways we completely take for granted now, and most of our smartphones have benefited from the leap that this phone gave to the cellphone industry.
The design was pretty revolutionary. Screens were half of even the most beautiful phones at the time, but Apple made the screen of the device define it's look. This meant that the OS was part of the design--kind of--and the tapered silver edges lead into a backing that was heavy and solid. The back had the simple Apple logo on a matte silver, and the design of the phones only weakness was it's inconsistent back. The black and silver looked a little off and this is the only reason the phone doesn't get a perfect score.
The display was not out of the ordinary, but compared to phones of the day, it looked like something out of science fiction. The display was both beautiful and interactive, and at that point phone screens weren't being compared to our HDTV's or computers.
As a phone, the device faired well, and the only knock against it was it's carrier. You could not hold this phone wrong.
The ecosystem, software and performance was ahead of it's time, but people mostly loved that it was a phone and a iPod. It wasn't until later that people fell in love with the features of what would become iOS, with functionality only seen on a computer before this.
All in all, this iPhone might still be the best phone at it's time of release. The pure unfiltered magic that it gave users hasn't diminished, and the phone should be credited for the market is now competes in.
