Apple MacBook Pro with Retina display (15-inch)

Verge Review

Though Apple quietly discontinued the 17-inch MacBook Pro this week, hardly a tear was shed. In fact, the company went out of its way to replace the ultra-premium tier with something even more covetous — namely, a 15-inch MacBook Pro with such a pixel-dense screen that the company put “Retina display” prominently in its name. Apple went even further, shrinking the body down to “as thin as Air” dimensions thanks to some clever industrial design and a few sacrifices along the way. And...

The computer's great, blaa blaa blaa. Instead of listing the obvious, I'll list the surprises I wasn't expecting with this computer.

    The Badies
    - The new Mag Safe design is like the older one, and isn't better for it. Yes it's thinner, but with it's flat shape it unplugs itself as soon as you lay the computer on an uneven surface like a bed.

    - Dead pixels. Three of them.

    - No one cares. Yeah, this may sound a bit pompous, but I was hoping someone would comment on my cool computer. Nope, not one word, or even a second glance. :(

    The Goodies
    - All the power. I'll have Windows running along side Dark Souls, Skype, and plenty of tabs in Chrome and hardly notice any sluggishness.

    - Remember those dead pixels? Apple replaced the screen for free. :)

    - It's a very solid gaming laptop. It out performs my Apple hater friends' computers, and that makes me feel happy.

    - Connection with my phone. I use iA Writer, Wunderlist, Hero Academy, and Messages on my iPhone and my Mac. They sync oddly well.

Without a doubt best computer I've ever owned. My first Mac and I haven't been let down once. The display is simply amazing. One problem is you cannot go back to a lower res display without noticing the difference. Anyone who has a "retina" iOS device will know the feeling. A little pricey but worth it.

I bought one a month after it was released. I've worked with all sort of computers (PC desktop, Windows Laptops, or even Mac Pro) and I do mostly developing, networking, and work a lot with VMware which it needs memory, processor, and fast storage as much as possible.

I'm really happy with MBPR and it does all the things I want to do perfectly. Although it's expensive, gets hot very soon, and if you are windows-based person well it has Mac OS X, you will love spending money on this one and even stuck with mac os x and force to use VMware or BootCamp for using windows.

Last word, only buy it if you really need to! no one likes spending money on something that doesn't have any use compare to its price.

15" laptop are getting too big.
High density display looks really good but don't bring more real estate.
Most high-end 15" laptops have 1080p display with more real estate.
For non-Mac users, the Mac keyboard and the Mac OS is something new that they have to learn.
    Memory is really expensive.
Only 1 drive (other 15" laptops support up to 3 drives including 2 2.5" drive and 1 mStata drive).

This is by far one of he best laptops i've ever owned, its REALLY fast, but at the same time really portable and thin! The only drawback for me its the keyboard, although its really good I feel it lacks something that previous Mac Book Pro's had. The design it;s just outstanding, I cant stop staring at it.
About the retina display, well, it has one big problem once you go retina in computers you cant go back! The biggest game changer here is reading text, before reading text in computers was not a nice activity, now its all different!

My Trackpad is having some issues after the first 4 weeks, but this is due to heavy and propably mis- usage (my old unibody had the same problem after a year...)
Besides that and the Apple Support (who will give me a new device instantly for sure) this thing is screaming fast and portable at the same time. Best Laptop I've had so far.

Well this is my first Mac and after working with it for a few weeks I'm still very pleased with its performance. I purchased this machine (2.6 ghz , 8gb ram , and a 512gb ssd) for school work and video and photo editing that i do in my spare time this machine handles photo editing in aperture and video editing in final cut like a pro even better than the new iMacs my school has for in the video department. I would highly recommend this machine to any one looking for a good high power laptop.

This has to be the best laptop that I have owed and I have been using Macs for some years now. The only flaw and what held this from a perfect 10 is the image retention in the LG screens that Apple refuses to acknowledge is a problem.
I just hope they fix that soon.

When I first picked this bad boy up, I immediately fell in love. By looking at in and comparing the size to the other MBP's I didn't think it would be this difference of weight and size. The sheer fact of being able to make a 15" computer this light and this durable is amazing. The display or goodness the display is second to none, and it's better than the iPad 3 display. The speed for what I do is great, I don't really do any gaming so, that aspect of this review is ommitted. Cutting this review short because I have to get back to work but, it's the best damn computer ever.

Just picked one up for grad school. I know you might be thinking that this laptop is a bit much for grad school. I had intended to get an Air because I wanted something portable and running OSX but when I customized the Air to make it fairly future proof (8gigs of RAM, min. of 256 SSD and an i7) I was getting close to the price range of this machine anyways. I'll start with things that I don't like about it. First is what it is missing. Two minor things that I loved about my previous pro was the button on the left that showed the batt. life when the laptop was shut and the LED indicator that flashed when in sleep mode are gone. Neither of these are deal breakers but at the same time were very nice to have. A slightly bigger omission is the kensignton lock slot. I would compulsively lock my other macbook pro when I left the house and it was nearly half the price, now I must find clever hiding spots to put my mind at ease. My last complaint is that it does creak just slightly when lifted from one side, sometimes and a very light creak. It still feels like a very solid machine but this is noticeable when compared to the rock solid feel of previous pros. Now on to the good (there is plenty). The display. It doesn't really even need too much description.... it's just amazing. I will say that you can definitely tell when something is not optimized, though. This occurrence should decrease with time. Keyboard feels great ( I don't mind that it is kinda shallow) and the trackpad is like any other Macbook Pro, unrivaled from my experience. Performance is nearly instantaneous in casual computing and when editing 1080 content in iMovie it is impressively fast, I haven't ran any games on it because, well, it is ridiculous to game on a laptop. That said I haven't heard any fan noise whatsoever and haven't felt the slightest amount of heat from it. My old pro would get really hot when streaming video. I have been streaming alot of video and putting it to my TV through airplay and it hasn't even gotten slightly warm. Battery life is typical MacBook Pro good and OSX is great but that is subjective and by subjective I mean for people who love rock solid OS's. I'd give it a 9.3 but my only options are 9 or 10 so I rounded. If you have the money you will not be disappointed, I feel that this machine will be a great companion for many, many years.
