Sony Xperia Z

Verge Review

Only a year after releasing the Xperia S, its first post-Ericsson phone, Sony has already reached the end of the alphabet with its flagship for 2013, the Xperia Z. The implication behind the name is that this handset is as ultimate as the letter Z itself, and Sony’s design and marketing teams have worked hard to amplify that idea. Cheap plastic has given way to tempered glass on the phone’s back and the power button is a precisely machined aluminum disc — so much time and attention has...

Everything is great about this phone.. viewing angle ?? HTC came up with that with their super screen 178° viewing angle. but it doesnt bother me or anyone else. cause you use your phone at 70°-90°... the only downside it that sony put a last-year CPU in it... but it is impresive that it scrore a 20,000 in Antutu but everyday life.. a HTC One X feels faster.. not the CPU fault cause if you put Nova Launcher you got a blazing fast phone.

While I care least about the camera in a phone as I tend to use only to upload food pictures or teaser pictures to fourSquare, Facebook, etc, it amazes me to see Sony lag behind even HTC who don't have a camera section like Sony has with Alpha and NEX series cameras.

The design would have been perfect if volume rockers are moved up and power button away from center to allow the use of universal car docks.

The Camera is very good, audio via the earpiece is excellent, loudspeaker could be better but the vibration is massive, screen is superb - but be aware that the viewing angles are not the best, Software modifications by Sony are great and performance is fantastic. This piece of black slab looks absolutely gorgeous just laying there, both with the screen on and off.

This phone is damn sexy! I have been using it for a week now and it is truly a beauty. The skin is simple and clean and really clever. The waterproofing is a terrific extra and the battery life is great with the extra stamina mode and battery saving settings. I really can't fault this device bar a small issue with viewing angles but to be honest it has not yet been an issue for me as the screen is large crisp and the colour reproduction is so good. Sony have definitely turned a corner with the Xperia Z and I cant wait to get my hands on the Z Tablet soon. This is my second android device, the first being the Galaxy Note 2 and prior to that I used iPhones but this device walks all over all my previous phones by a long shot!
Well done Sony is all i can say to wrap up!

A stunner of a phone with one of the most beautiful and life like displays out there, the viewing angles sure has some issue but what the heck, the phone is waterproof!
I have a bath with that thing!
The speaker is tiny too but not atrocious by any means. The bundles headsets are of the best i have ever heard which includes the earpods and the Beats bundled with the HTC!

Gorgeous phone from a quality manufacturer, only let down by Android's ongoing limitations, scattered UI, lame play store, vulnerabilities...
Makes the Samsung offerings look like the poor design cousins from the wrong side of the tracks.
Highly recommended first choice, if you cannot stretch to an iPhone 4S or 5.

I have had the Xperia Z for a couple of weeks now to test it. Lovely phone. Luckily I received one with the Sharp made screen which is the same as in the HTC Butterfly (it seems The Verge got one with a JDC screen which is inferior). It's very, very nice btw (clarity, sharpness, contrast are all best in class), it's just a shame that Sony didn't use this panel for all of them rather than going for two suppliers, one of which is clearly inferior. The camera could use a lot of work, but as seen by the recent discovery of the unprocessed burst mode pictures, there is clearly a lot of potential in the 13MP sensor so hopefully Sony can work something out. For the first week the battery life was poor, but now it is much better, I can get a full day of heavy use without a mid-day charge, and two days of light use.

Android 4.1.2 is better than 4.2.2, so I don't see it as a downside, I know Sony are going to update it very soon, but I would have preferred it if they skipped 4.2.2 completely and went to 5.0 ASAP instead of wasting time porting 4.2.2. I like the idea of PlayStation Mobile, but the execution is poor, hopefully Sony work on getting more developers on board this year and get more third party devices added to the ecosystem.

All-in-all an impressive device. Sony's best smartphone to date, and I can only hope that it is a sign of things to come in terms of design and power. There are just a few small niggles (most of which can be fixed with a software update) that stop this being a perfect device. If Sony can fix the camera so that normal shots look like those taken in burst mode the camera goes from a 7 to a 9, and supposedly 4.2.2 brings some battery life enhancement so that would push the battery score up also.

Easily the best phone released this year.

This phone's weakest link is its screen - and that's still pretty damn awesome. The fact that the top bar and soft keys aren't black but actually dark grey has led to people thinking it can't show black - but it can. Add a black background and it's obvious how the top and bottom stand out with their lighter color.

While viewing angles aren't stellar, they don't affect the phone's usability: you can still watch Youtube videos with your friends. Nobody I showed my phone to has mentioned the screen - more people comment on how large the phone is.

The camera isn't great, but it does make pretty pictures.

This phone really is waterproof. People are hedging that fact by stating they wouldn't want to actually take the chance, but I've had it under water for a few minutes each on a few different occasions now. I regularly watch Youtube under the shower now - with the added benefit that my phone is squeaky clean every day :-) The Xperia Z is absolutely beautiful and lightning quick with minimal stutter - although I do use Nova Launcher and can't really comment on Sony's stock launcher.

    I don't know what's not to love.

Very briefly, this is the best phone i've ever used. Fast, fluid, beautiful. No phone will ever be perfect, but I honestly think the design of this phone is second to none. It really does not deserve the low score from this website. While the Sony ecosystem (not Android) isn't perfect either, none of them are. But for Sony enthusiasts, all the sweat n tears from Kaz's one-sony strategy can be embodied in this device and everything just works great. Hopefully people will see how strong sony is making a comeback and the industry can move on from having only two profitable companies in the smartphone arena.

Design of the xperia z shows is mixed. The build quality is great made of polyimide. The phone is waterproof and dustproof wow. But does it make sense in daily use. I guess not but it's a good safety measure. The design has no innovation. Just a simple piece a 5" piece of slab in your hand with sharp edges makes it uncomfortable to use.

Display is really sharp thanks to it's super pixel density and natural colours. But it's not the great overall. Sony used the low quality IPS TFT display in the phone and tried to emphasise with gimmicky opti-contrast results still the worst contrast and viewing angles in comparison to other phones out there.

Camera is very much disappointing because I expected much as sony used the new Exmor RS sensor. First thing was it took about 4-5 seconds to open the camera app. The pictures are just can be said to be average when it comes to sharpness and details. Also the low light pictures are typically pathetic if you compare with iPhone 5, Galaxy SIII and Lumia 920 like phones. Not something special in camera department.

Reception and call quality is great for an expensive phone like this and it performed very well as I expected. It supports all exclusive radios available like 4G LTE and high speed HSPA.

Performance wise it is really really performed well. This time sony didn't used the older chipsets and processor like they done in Xperia S. The phone comes with quad core snapdragon S4 Pro processor that performs incredibly well. In benchmarks it is on top notch. Memory of 2GB is also pretty well, muti tasking is pleasure. But sometimes it gets some glitchy lag in heavy media. Also the audio speakers of the phone is seriously polite.

Software of this phone is pretty well. The phone is 4.1.2 jelly bean out of the box not the latest version 4.2.2. Unlike previous phones of sony this phone is less burgen with sony skin. GUI is now much simpler and but not totally as good as stock android. Themes are quite boring with greyish background.

Battery life is great for a device like this. Androids are notorious for it's battery life. But sony practically made a better feature of stamina mode which boosts the battery life by switching off all unnecessary connections like wifi and 4G when phone is not in use.

Overall I give this phone 7/10. It's a nice phone when it comes to general performance but not the best phone you can get it the market for such a big price tag.
