On The Verge, Episode 011: Oblong's John Underkoffler, RIM's Thorsten Heins, and more!

What a way to end a season! It all starts with news from best actor nominee Joshua Topolsky and best supporting actor nominees Paul Miller and Nilay Patel (also nominated for his role in "Jerk Bosses").

Ross Miller took a trip to Oblong industries to check out their work in multi-screen hand gesture computers à la Minority Report. Then John Underkoffler — Oblong co-founder and chief scientist, as well as the science adviser for Minority Report and Iron Man — talks in-studio with Josh. Fascination, awe, even an ounce of fear — you won't believe Josh's range of emotion. Lastly, from the west coast, debonair west coast editor Dieter Bohn sits down with RIM CEO Thorsten Heins to figure out what really is going on with BlackBerry right now.

The episode ends as finales are wont to do — with a twist. You should definitely watch that. Thanks for watching, we'll see you next year!

... but enough hand-waving, let's talk On The Verge. Our last episode this year is today (Tuesday) at 6PM ET (true believers and long-time fans, note that we're starting an hour earlier than last time). It's going to be the Show to End All Shows™ (not actually trademarked, we just like the character) that you won't want to miss.

First up, we took a trip to Oblong industries in Los Angeles to check out the Minority Report-style work they're doing with natural gesture interfaces — truly futuristic stuff. Then Oblong co-founder John Underkoffler — the man who actually designed the interface for the film Minority Report before making it a reality — will join us in studio to talk about a future where science fiction blends into science fact. Additionally, Dieter Bohn sat down with Research in Motion CEO Thorsten Heins to talk about the challenges in keeping BlackBerry competitive when it reinvents itself for next year's BB10 launch. Plus, of course, hijinks and shenanigans from Paul, Nilay, and Josh.

It feels like almost yesterday that we sat together in a large room and enjoyed On The Verge together — in fact, it was only just last week.
One thing to keep in mind in this exciting episode of On The Verge: we shot it just hours before the election results came in. As such, Josh, Paul, and Nilay sat down and recorded a news segment for either major outcome — all of which, of course, we kept intact for your viewing pleasure.

It was also a time of celebration as The Verge last week celebrated its one year anniversary, Paul passed the six-month mark for living offline, which he celebrated with some awesome trips to Maker Faire and NASA. We also wrapped up one of the craziest months in the industry ever: iPad mini, Nexus 4, Nexus 10, and a brand new Microsoft (Windows 8, Windows Phone 8). Lots to talk about, lots to see.

Josh sat down with Foursquare CEO Dennis Crowley, who had a lot to say on the future of the check-in and discovery service. Also on the set, we have Polygon Senior Editors Chris Plante and Russ Frushtick to talk about the launch of our new favorite video game sister website — be sure to check out Press Reset, Cooperatives, and The Besties Podcast for even more of the dynamic duo.

... Hey, why are you still reading this? Go watch!

On The Verge is streaming live at 7:15PM ET / 4:15PM PT tonight with Foursquare CEO Dennis Crowley, Paul's trip to NASA, and more!

You asked, so we delivered. Josh, Nilay, Paul, and the rest of the crew will be hosting On The Verge tonight to an intimate audience in New York City — but this time, we're inviting the rest of the internet to come join in the fun, live! Just tune in right here at 7:15PM ET to bask in the On The Verge experience.

For starters, Paul Miller went on a couple trips to see the culture of invention on both the (relatively) smaller scale of Maker Faire and larger scale of NASA. Then in the studio we're excited to have Foursquare CEO Dennis Crowley talk about the future of discovery (and maybe share a few secrets on how to get special badges). We've also invited Polygon editors Chris Plante and Russ Frushtick to hang out and talk about both their launch and documentary series Press Reset.

Josh, Nilay, and Paul will of course be together again to talk about about the biggest stories of the month — and there will absolutely be a lot to talk about in this brave new world following major Apple, Microsoft, and Google events. So cast your vote early (if you're a US citizen, that is) and settle in — it's the next best thing to being there.

On The Verge has been postponed until November 6th due to weather

Bad news, folks. In a clever twist, Mother Nature has decided to drag-and-drop Hurricane Sandy and Arctic air over the Northeast United States this week — a phenomenon that's been affectionally called Frankenstorm*. Because of this, there's a really good chance city transportation will be taking the week off. For the safety of everyone involved (cast, crew, fans), we're postponing this Tuesday's On The Verge.

Fear not, though, as the weather will not last forever and we will return November 6th. In the meantime, if you're in an affected area, be sure to grab some necessary supplies and charge up every phone / tablet / laptop in the house. Download a few movies, games, e-books, too. And above all else, please be safe. We'll see you soon!

(*) Note: It really should be called "Frankenstorm's monster," but we digress.

On The Verge, Episode 009: Microsoft's Andy Wilson and Industrial Light & Magic

From prose to prototype, this week's episode of On The Verge kept to a (fairly loose) theme about science fiction. First Josh, Nilay, and Paul took a look at one possible dystopic future as predicted by both Apple Store lines and iOS 6 Maps (it's all in good fun, we promise). HTC also graciously let the trio play around with a quartet of its new Windows Phone 8X flagship devices. Next up, Bryan Bishop took a trip out to legendary special effects house Industrial Light & Magic to learn, among other things, how The Hulk came to life on screen for The Avengers.

Then science fiction became science fact when Microsoft principal researcher Andy Wilson joined Josh on stage to show off some of the crazy projects he's been working on in the lab, including a wearable multitouch projector. We wrapped up on a lively discussion about what science fiction technology we want in the real world (spoiler: never bet against Josh's ability to know the people of New York and what they like).

On The Verge returns today with a trip to Industrial Light & Magic, live demos from Microsoft Research, and more!

On The Verge is back! Our next show returns today, September 22nd, 2012, just hours after summer ends, and we've got some goodies in store for you.

From prose to prototype, science fiction to science fact, we've built the entire show around the idea of our dreams of the future and how reality is catching up. For starters, we took a trip to Industrial Light & Magic for a behind-the-scenes glimpse of the legendary special effects house and a chat with some of the minds behind the visual wizardry in The Avengers and There Will Be Blood. Then in the studio, we've got Microsoft Research's Andy Wilson to guide us through some of the wild technology being made in the Redmond labs. There'll be exclusive live tech demos you won't want to miss! (Update: we'll also have HTC's new Windows Phone 8X on hand — in all four colors!)

Josh, Nilay, and Paul will of course be together to talk about about the biggest stories of the month (you can probably guess one or two of those stories), and as always, you'll be privy to a selection of entertaining segments — ones that will ultimately change your perception of reality in ways you cannot even begin to fathom.

The show is taping at 5:00PM at the Manhattan Center TV Studio 1, located at 303 West 34th Street (across the street from Madison Square Garden and adjacent to the Hammerstein Ballroom) in New York City. Tickets will be available starting at 4:00PM to give people an equal opportunity to come to the show.
On The Verge, Episode 008: Senator Al Franken, Mary Jo Foley, Chipocrite

We switched things up for this episode of On The Verge: Nilay took a trip to Washington DC to interview Senator Al Franken about how the government should regulate technology, including the Senator's controversial support of PIPA. Like Nilay Patel, the Senator has strong opinions on net neutrality and privacy. Unlike Nilay Patel, he can remain calm when explaining the issue to a room full of Senators.

Next, Mary Jo Foley stopped by the studio to talk to Josh, Nilay, and Paul abut all things Microsoft. She pulled no punches — she thought Windows 8 would be a "disaster" before she saw Surface and said that Windows Phone users "think different," but we can't help but feel like we've heard that one somewhere before.

We also heard music from Chipocrite, checked in with Dieter at the Google Fiber launch in Kansas City, and invented a new game show that is totally unique in every way. Seriously, we didn't just rip off Jeopardy.

On The Verge episode 008 teaser: Mary Jo Foley on the shock of installing Windows 8

In the latest episode of On The Verge, veteran journalist Mary Jo Foley joined editors Josh Topolsky, Paul Miller, and Nilay Patel for a chat about the state of Microsoft and its upcoming products like Windows 8 and Microsoft Surface. Foley says that "Windows 8 is going to be very interesting," and that "people who install it on existing non-touch laptops are going to be surprised, if they haven't tried it already, about what that experience is like." Find out what operating system Foley is using on her laptop, and more, in this clip — and see the rest of the discussion when the full episode airs on Monday.

On The Verge episode 008 teaser: how Senator Al Franken 'calmly' explains net neutrality to his colleagues

For this episode of On The Verge, our Nilay Patel visited Washington, D.C., to speak with Senator Al Franken (D-Minnesota) about privacy, net neutrality, and the wisdom of his fellow senators on technology-related issues. Senator Franken says that "according to a lot of House members, the internet did just fine without net neutrality" — an idea the Senator's not buying. Check out the Senator's views on net neutrality in this segment, and look for the full episode on Monday.

Tonight! On The Verge with Senator Al Franken, Mary Jo Foley, and Chipocrite!

We've got some goodies in store for you when On The Verge returns tonight. For starters, Nilay Patel ventured down to our nation's seat of power — Washington DC in case you've forgotten — to chat with Senator Al Franken about security and facial recognition technology. Then in the studio we're excited to have veteran journalist Mary Jo Foley with us to discuss the future of Microsoft (and technology in general).

Josh, Nilay, and Paul will of course be together again to talk about about the biggest stories of the month, and as always, you'll be privy to a selection of entertaining segments, the memory of which will haunt every moment of your waking life. Samsung is sponsoring this episode and they were kind enough to give us three of their Series 9 laptops to raffle off to our audience. Come to the show and you will be eligible to win one of them!

We're also excited to announce that Chipocrite will be preforming on the show!

We start taping at 7:00PM at the Manhattan Center TV Studio 1, located at 303 West 34th Street (across the street from Madison Square Garden and adjacent to the Hammerstein Ballroom) in New York City.

Last episode we changed the way we are ticketing, and we're sticking with that. Tickets will be available starting at 6pm to give people an equal opportunity to come to the show. Here's what you need to know:

There is no admission fee — tickets are completely free.

The event is all ages.

Ticketing will begin at the TV Studio at 6:00PM. You cannot collect tickets for friends or family -- anyone who would like to come must be present to get a ticket.

The venue is located at 303 West 34th Street (across the street from Madison Square Garden and adjacent to the Hammerstein Ballroom) in New York City.

Ticketing will begin at the TV Studio at 6:00PM on Thursday. You cannot collect tickets for friends or family -- anyone who would like to come must be present to get a ticket.

The venue is located at 303 West 34th Street (across the street from Madison Square Garden and adjacent to the Hammerstein Ballroom) in New York City.
On The Verge, Episode 007: LeVar Burton, Alexis Ohanian, and Tim Wu

It's possible there's almost too much On The Verge this month. In fact, it might just be our most jam-packed show ever. For starters, the inimitable LeVar Burton stops in to talk about his time on Star Trek, stepping into iconic roles, becoming a meme, and the new Reading Rainbow app. Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian also hops on the couch to talk about cats, karma, and of the internet's ability to effect change. Batman masks soon follow. Finally, Tim Wu — the man who coined the term "net neutrality" — sits down for a serious chat about what we can do to protect our internet freedoms.

If that isn't enough show for you, fear not. Ross Miller and Nilay Patel are on hand to talk about the news, Paul Miller submits a video diary from Chicago, and we've got some special segments that are sure to put a smile on your face. Or whatever it is you do when you're feeling happy.

Seasoned veterans know the drill – we have the full episode below followed by enough clips to fill up the front page of your Tumblr. Go ahead and Tumbl. We don't mind.

In this jam-packed episode of On The Verge, our own Joshua Topolsky sits down with the legendary LeVar Burton to talk about his new Reading Rainbow app, life as a meme, his Star Trek fame, and… Gary Busey. Does LeVar channel his inner Geordi when Josh sets the mood with the distinctive hum of the Enterprise? You'll have to wait until the full episode appears on Monday to find out, but for now, take a look at this clip.

We've crammed more content into this episode of On The Verge than anyone believed was humanly possible. No, really.
On The Verge episode 006 teaser: Damon Lindelof on working with 'Prometheus' director Ridley Scott

Getting to speak with Damon Lindelof, the co-creator of Lost and screenwriter of Prometheus, was undoubtably an On The Verge highlight. In this teaser from our show last Thursday, Lindelof tells our own Joshua Topolsky about director Ridley Scott's strong hand in the creative process during the making of Prometheus — it turns out that when you're working with a director like Scott, screenwriting can be somewhat comparable to Mad Libs, with Lindelof filling in the blanks around Scott's vision.

The full episode will be available Monday, including the full interview with Lindelof, Paul Miller's encounter with Masi Oka (of Heroes and Hawaii Five-0), and a performance by Infinity Shred — but until then, feast your eyes and ears on the clip below.

Tony is a former Apple exec who is now the CEO of Nest. We've covered Nest a bunch here at The Verge and we're excited to talk to Tony about his history at Apple, and what Nest can do to keep our podcast room cooler. It gets really hot in there, it's actually becoming a problem.

Chris is going to talk about Polygon. Don't be surprised if Chris and Josh skip the interview and just play Mario Kart 64 on that giant screen behind the desk.

We're also excited to have Animal Style as a special musical guest along with the usual news, videos, and hilarious interludes.

On The Verge, Episode 004: Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson

On The Verge is ready for a lot of things, but we clearly weren't ready for renowned astrophysicist Dr. Neil deGrasse Tyson, who stopped by to talk space exploration, life as a meme, and why he carries a slightly-illegal laser with him at all times. After we recovered, we talked about what we learned this month: Nilay took a trip to SXSW, Josh visited the new iPad line and tried to steal Greg Packer's seat, and we found out what happens when whiskey meets dubstep. It was something. Full show below, and lots of clips to follow, in case you're a nonlinear sort of sapien.

When Jimmy Fallon gets angry, he gets even. Also, he shows up as a guest on On The Verge, where he wows the crowd with his professional comedy antics and tales of his A-list lifestyle. We, the putty in his hands, barely got out alive. Still, Joshua, Nilay, and Paul managed to keep it together long enough to talk about their humdrum weeks — Paul went to GE's research labs, Nilay discovered a truck / boat hybrid, and Josh suffered a minor breakdown working on his iPad 3 launch date theories. On a more serious note, the team bid farewell to Joanna Stern in the only way they know how: to the heartfelt song stylings of Sarah McLachlan. After that, our musical guest George & Jonathan played us out in a lush 16-bits. You can find the whole show below, or you can consume it in bite-sized increments if you keep scrolling. We know you'll make the right decision.

On The Verge, Episode 002: Daring Fireball's John Gruber

We did it again, people: we had a show. On Friday night, Joshua, Nilay, Paul, and Joanna gathered in front of a live, studio audience and had a grand old time. Special guest John Gruber sat down with Josh for an in-depth interview about the tech industry and the future of Apple, Joanna showed Josh a few ways to make Windows more tolerable, Josh got an exclusive look inside Microsoft Research, and Paul shared tales of adventure beyond the studio. And that's just scratching the surface — there's much more in season 1, episode 2 of On The Verge.

On The Verge 002 teaser, full episode on Monday

The second episode of On The Verge was taped last night to wide appeal. If you couldn't make it out to NY, check out this little teaser, including a bit of Josh's chat with John Gruber, conjecturing on the future of Apple. Interestingly, John actually thinks Apple might get better at some of the little details of design with out Steve, but of course there's the bigger picture to consider. Stay tuned for the entire show on Monday, which includes our whole chat with Gruber, a tour of Microsoft's campus, and many more precious and spellbinding moments. You won't want to miss it.

Oh, and you can also watch this very same teaser on our YouTube page!

On The Verge, Episode 001: Google's Matias Duarte

We really did it, guys: we made a show. On Monday night, Joshua, Nilay, and Paul gathered in front of a live, studio audience, and, frankly, blew minds. Special guest Matias Duarte sat down with Josh for an in-depth interview, along with a little game we like to call "Rate That Skin!" We also got to do a live demonstration of the Lytro light field camera, and Josh and the boys ran through their favorite "New Thing," with 15 seconds apiece to share their hearts. And that's just scratching the surface. Basically, we made TV... er, web magic, and we'd like to share it with you; please join us as we unveil season 1, episode 1, of On The Verge.
