'ZombiU' is proof Wii U's controls can be more than a gimmick

ZombiU is the exclusive zombie-killing simulator for Wii U shown briefly at the Ubisoft and Nintendo press conferences. It is also one of the show's best surprises and one of the most promising games announced for the upcoming console.

Polygon had a chance to go hands-on with the first-person shooter at the Nintendo booth, and found it took full advantage of the Wii U GamePad without falling into the trap of novel, but cumbersome controls.

The GamePad is represented in-game by a tablet your character uses to scan the world, a dilapidated London. Scan bodies to see if they're infected or carrying loot, scan objects to see if they're ammo or health supplies. What the scanner is seeing is visualized on the GamePad's screen, so using it...

'Trine 2: Director's Cut' adds new modes and expansion content for Wii U

Trine 2: Director's Cut was hidden in a big group of surprise Wii U games at Nintendo's E3 press conference, but that doesn't mean you should ignore it. This well-received action platformer from developer Frozenbyte was released on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC late last year, but the upcoming Wii U version has some major additions.

In addition to tons of minor fixes and tweaks, Trine 2: Director's Cut will have an all-new unlockable level and revised controls taking advantage of the Wii U GamePad. A Wii-exclusive mode called "Magic Mayhem" will allow up to four players to join in for online or offline multiplayer, though details on how this mode actually plays are still missing as of yet.

If the tweaked original game and the "Magic...

Project P-100 for Wii U coming from Platinum Games and Nintendo

After Nintendo's press conference this morning Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime went on Spike TV to tease Project P-100, a title currently in development by Platinum Games and being published by Nintendo. The game is listed as a launch window title for the Wii U.

The trailer opens with a giant fireball falling out of the sky and crashing into a small city. Upon impact it transforms into a robot and prepares to attack. The rest of the gameplay is strongly reminiscent of Pikmin, with players saving the town's citizens and collecting them into groups. A large group of citizens can transform into robots and manifest weapons in order to combat the alien enemy.

Platinum Games is the Japan-based game development studio behind B...

Nintendo will release a pedometer like device to work with their upcoming title, WiiFit U. According to Nintendo President Satoru Iwata, players will attach the device to their body and it will record steps taken, track calories burned and monitor altitude. It will also record the player's exercising habits when they are not playing WiiFit U.

The pedometer will communicate with the Wii U via infrared, merging its data with that from the game. No official name or release date were announced.

Panorama View announced for Wii U

At the end of Nintendo's E3 press briefing today, Nintendo head Satoru Iwata revealed a piece of software called Wii U Panorama View that makes the Wii U controller into a virtual reality headset, sort of. Nintendo filmed video footage of real world locations, and stitched it together so Wii U owners can move the screen controller around to watch from whatever angle they desire. It's a way of looking at video footage as if you're in the video while it's playing, basically, similar to Google Maps but with video instead of stills.

The demonstration didn't show any interactive elements beyond moving the controller and selecting different camera angles, so it seems likely that Panorama View will be included with the Wii U hardware or...
