You are aware that nobody is using G+ right? It’s a flop. Your attempt at shocking with ‘whimsical’ and ‘charming’ traditionalism is the rule, not the exception.

“At least Google ads aren’t as intrusive as flashing banners on some other sites.”
Yeah, you’re right, it’s a win win.. Text ads are less heinous, and actually more informative.
But don’t kid yourself: Google has this thing called GoogleTV. If they could get it to work properly, Google would have lots of graphics, and amazing metrics on what shows people watch, etc.
With GoogleTV, you’re basically watching the Nielsen box everyday. But we all know that.

Actually ‘plebs’ didn’t invest in this. Plebs in the US don’t have a pot to piss in, nevermind a roof over their heads.

I think you’re mixing up MONEY and PEOPLE… ‘Marketshare’ here is a bizarre term to use, since lots of people have accounts on multiple social networks.
Put it this way… % of internet traffic for Facebook is big deal. And they put ads all over the site. The problem they’re facing is that people come to Facebook to see their friends.
Ironically a business that started from the social networks of college students has come back to bite them in the ass. College kids have no money.
You can put an ad on facebook, and you’ll probably get lots of clicks (if you don’t, no one cares.. its PPC ad dollars). The question is… people who click to your site through Facebook.. do they ever BUY anything? yes we all know the clichees about finding ‘women on the site who are engaged and looking for bridal services’… how about OTHER kinds of businesses? That’s where FB is struggling. And that’s where they’re very very very different from Google. It’s a fundamental misunderstanding of what Facebook IS.
Yes Facebook is addictive, and Mark is brilliant for not plastering it with ads back in 2006. The Timeline and everything they’ve done is brilliant. But the efficacy of Facebook ads is something that can EASILY be measured. It’s not rocket science. You put in $300, and you get 300 or so clicks on your site. And from that you might get one or two email signups… maybe even a sale. If advertisers identify FB as a waste of money, it’s not a sustainable business. Okay, I take that back. FB can be a great place to ‘get the word out’… but as a place to ‘look’ for customers, it’s kind of a dud.

“If they could price it as competitively as Mac prices their upgrades, I think it has a damn good shot. $30, not ~$200.”
First of all, flagrant foul for calling Apple ‘Mac’… that was awesome
Secondly, no way in HELL can MS have agressive pricing like Apple has OS upgrades and iWork/iLife (Eg. 79 for a suite of apps, 2 bucks per app). It’s just not going to happen. All those are money losers. Apple makes money on hardware, MSFT makes money on software.
So the hypothetical there.. you can just forget it.. not gonna happen.

Microsoft absolutely must develop a platform like metro
—
Everyone outside MS thinks Metro should be a ‘distinct’ OS, (like iOS).
It’s not. It’s a design language. That’s the problem. MS didn’t actually make a ‘mobile’ OS. They made a design language based on the Zune Tile UI. They still just have one OS. And it’s okay on Computers. Not meant for tablets.
Whether they follow Apple into a ‘Cars + Trucks’ pair of Operating Systems later on is another story… for now, the MS company line is… PCs will never go out of style and We will never been in the post-PC or post-Windows era.*
*Soon after Ballmer made these claims, the new company policy has been to name every single device and piece of software either a ‘PC’ or ‘Windows’…Whether it’s a watch, a toilet seat cover, or a James Bond Death Ray
;-P

FFS Ballmer, spare us. Windows will come preloaded on every PC in the store. Sales numbers are not interesting. What’s interesting about Microsoft is… will touchscreen laptops ever take off. If they do, then Windows 8 is useful. If they don’t, then Windows 8 is a POS, a waste of time, and iPad will rule the world.
