I know, everyone who his a fan of Microsoft must work for them… Orrrrr maybe some of us find absolutely nothing wrong with how they are handling things in this next gen of consoles and are tired of the whiny “it’s not perfect for me and my completely drastic one off wild situation so I’m going to cry about it” commenters. I just took it out on seanpat05 in this case.

Tether the console to your phone or a mifi device, sign in, authenticate and then disconnect. Boom! It’s insane how people want companies to hold back progression because they have some individual specialized scenario that may cause an issue. And any of theses issues have solutions to them except for a very small minority of people which no company will ever care about in the first place. Companies make things for the majority not the small niche scenarios. Does it suck for those people, sure, but that’s life.

Ok, people who take their consoles on vacation can just suck it up. Jesus tap dancing Christ, I have officially heard it all. If you need a gaming console on vacation you have bigger issues and need to take a look at that part of your life. Also, the person you reference with DSL is in no way paying monthly for a service that, the way you make it sound, is down all the time. I don’t believe that for one second. If it’s down 2% of the time (which would be a lot) it is more than reliable enough for any online connectivity requirement that any next gen console may require. I swear, if Microsoft showed the cure for cancer on stage yesterday commenters would find a way to come up with ridiculous scenarios to paint in a bad light.

Exactly. I don’t get any of this at all. Wi-Fi is built in, connect it to your router and forget about it. You can sign on with a silver account, nowhere is it stated that gold is required for the system online in this basic manner. I have read soooo many whiny complaints over the stupidest arguments the last 12 hours concerning the Xbox One. On Kotaku it’s like MS killed all kittens, clubbed every baby seal live on stage. I did not see a single thing presented or even rumored about the Xbox One that would steer me away from buying it. I do however say go invest heavily in the company that makes Reynold’s wrap because the tin-foil hat brigade was out in full force yesterday.

It will go DVR/TiVo → Xbox → Receiver → TV. If your Receiver doesn’t support HDMI-CEC then I guess you will have to control the volume of it with a remote control or use the IR Blasters referenced to control volume and turn on the TV. At this point volume is all your receiver will really have to handle, and HDMI-CEC commands between the Xbox and DVR won’t be interrupted since the receiver would have nothing to do with them. All the receiver would be for is to pass audio to speakers and picture to the TV.
Microsoft is looking at the next 5-7 years with this technology. Some people will get to use all of the abilities from day one the way it’s supposed to be, and some will not. But as time goes on, and people see what is truly possible, they will use that as an opportunity to invest in their technology and get it all up to speed. I think in many ways the Xbox One will help advance in-home entertainment technology greatly.

Any Comcast subscriber can take their old box into a center and replace it with a brand new one that will support this new tech for free. They can even have it sent to their home with a return box for their old one. The way I look at it, the Xbox One will force the upgrading of people’s updated technology, and in many cases it won’t cost the end user a penny. I can’t speak for other services and their devices but Comcast has a huge subscriber base.

The great thing about this, is that it will get people to trade in their old boxes for the new ones since it is free of charge to do so and force progression in the industry. If people know that a company offers boxes that CAN work this easily with the new game console they just bought I would think that they would make the necessary move. I don’t think the other devices will matter anyways since this is about cable box control and those Blu-ray players will become redundant and not necessary. The receiver will sit after the cable box, xbox chain anyways so no need for the xbox to be able to control it. There really is a limited set of devices that the xbox needs to control, ideally all through the network, but for the unfortunate or lazy there will always be the IR blaster that Nilay is complaining about.

Published openly by TiVo and I found it in 10 seconds doing a Bing search. I have a feeling the most common devices will get better support than the others but unfortunately that’s the way it goes. As a WP8 user I deal with that all the time. When it comes to cable boxes, in the US at least, there are not a ton of boxes since they are controlled by a select few providers who can easily work in getting the necessary info to MS. Also a receiver won’t matter since the xbox and cable box will interact before it gets to the receiver.

I have a TiVo and a WP8 device and there are several network based remote control apps. If a basic app writer can do it I’m pretty sure it’s not hard for MS to do the same. As for Comcast boxes, the xfinity tablet apps control your box just through coax as long as the tablet has internet connectivity. I think Comcast would be more than happy to give MS this access seeing that it promotes keeping your traditional cable subscription.
