The front glass in most modern mobile phones is wider (usually by 3mm each side) than the display it self, while smaller (1mm) bezel surround the glass, (example: iPhone 4/4S , Galaxy note, Galaxy nexus …etc), by extending the display to be the same width as the glass width while keeping the very thin 1mm bezel , you will not compromise the phone structural integrity at all

Will the solution is to make the device wider (like the galaxy note), this will solve the palm issue; as larger surface area of your hand will be under the phone , of course wider phones can’t be used with one hand but (for me at least) i am OK with it, when i use my galaxy note i handle it like a tablet , i hold it from the sides with one hand and use the other one to ‘touch’.

Different solution would be smarter multi-touch driver that recognize the palm and ignore it.
