The Verge is absolutely not a Sony fan either, so don’t think it’s that.

Sony’s been showing things that actually matter at this point. We’re months before the release of either console and just showing off services and gimmicks isn’t really interesting right now. Before the release you want developers to get excited about your console and to start actually developing for it. And for those it’s exactly the tech demos and developer possibilities that are interesting.
We’ll see who has the most games (indie and big ones) available a few months after launch.
Sony will show what matters for gamers and consumers at E3, where the target audience is right.

We’ll see how much of that integration makes it out of the US. Given Microsoft’s past track record I really don’t have much faith in it.

That’s 2011, it was released before Kaz came into play. I’m really talking about the recent developments (products released in late 2012 and after that).

Kaz knows what he’s doing. The amount of integration you’re starting to see in Sony products is amazing. They’re using open standards for everything too.
A great example is how they’re going to put NFC in pretty much everything. Effortless sharing and pairing between all Sony devices (and other NFC-compatible devices). And they’re going much further than that.
Another thing they’re doing is increasing the amount of new technology. They have Triluminos, the best and most popular camera sensors, …
They’re also pretty much the only big player still on good terms with Google. They’re working together a lot on AOSP (Sony is the biggest contributor to AOSP of all OEMs) and integrating Google TV features where possible. Why? Because the only way Sony and Google compete is with the Play Store and Sony Entertainment Network.

They stopped doing that a few years back. They’re really, really pushing industry standards now.

Yes it is! Sony is planning on putting NFC in everything to be able to use one-touch pairing. Imagine just tapping your TV remote to your laptop to start mirroring. Sony’s doing it.
