It is my guess that the value in this experience is not so much in the year away, but the fresh perspective he can offer when he returns. A year sounds about right to totally rid himself of old habits, perception and expectations. He then has the opportunity upon return to rationally evaluate what is good, what is bad, what is cumbersome, what is exciting.. and lets face it, the internet is a non-cohesive mess when you take a step back.

From Paul’s nerdier side, I expect he’s hoping to get the feeling of being a time traveller upon his return. An outsider able to marvell at leaps in technology rather than the incrimental steps that we all experience and have become desensitised to.

I place great value on his experiment. I look forward to reading of his observations whilst away and have great interest in reading of his perspective once he returns. As an excellent wordsmith, I expect he will be able to adequately condense and explain to us insights that we likely will never have. The value in that is enormous.

I find IE9 fast to load initially (instant), a bit slower than the others to load pages, but it has noticably better performance once loaded. I use IE for my bookmarked blogs and use Chrome for my searching.

I have no doubt that IE is by far the best option for reading the Verge.
