“what led Oracle on this path of self-destruction”?
IMHO, we are watching just one of many battles in a war that proprietary software companies are waging against the open source developers.
If you are the captain of one of these large companies that makes oodles of money by charging people to keep your code a secret, how do you compete against the open and sometimes free alternatives? You can’t innovate because that costs money, hurts your bottom line and frankly is just plain hard to do. You can’t under price it. You can’t buy it and shut it down. The only way left to compete is to litigate and hope your deep pockets will shut down your competition with relatively little “investment”.
Don’t confuse seeking recourse from a jury of your peers for damages you’ve suffered wrongly with a simple business plan. They are two different things and only one is a valid use of the court system. The other is a business plan born of despiration.
