Although the legal premise of a publicly traded company is that the executives are obligated to maximize the company’s profit, you could argue that with all this scrutiny they’re undergoing, they could run the risk of substantially harming the company’s image, and therefore sales, leading to lower profits.
It’s not so cut-and-dry.
