Sounds like you are doing it wrong.

Hold down the option key when you click on the close button to close all open windows for the current app ( or you can use the keyboard shortcut command + option + w). Obviously you can’t do this while in Mission Control but that is not really a hardship.

Not sure what sort of used Mac market you have there, eBay perhaps? Anyway, I would look at trying to get a 15" Macbook Pro. It does not need to be retina but the dedicated graphics of the 15" will give you the performance you may need.
Try and get one with as much ram as possible as well. I might mean a 2011 model but should still be a better option than the Air.

Have read some of it and really love it, it has an almost simplistic ‘Mr Men’ quality to it, good work.

You make the same mistake I hear all the time. As others above me have already stated, brand awareness is nothing necessarily to do with ‘cool’.
There may be an element of ‘cool’ about Apple products but that is a small bonus and does not play a significant part in their brand status. Quality of hardware, ease of use and simplicity of software, reliability, industry leading customer satisfaction ratings and unrivaled after sales support and the main components of Apple brand strength.
The ‘cool’ label is a disingenuous putdown by those who don’t understand why people buy Apple.

I would call that a load of crap. Having worked most of my working life in the computing industry (and that’s very long time) I’ve never met anyone who has bought an Apple product because they thought it was ‘cool’.
People who don’t like Apple products or rather can’t understand what other people see in them come up with these snide labels, fanboy, iToy, shiny, cool and all the other garbage. Frankly it is small minded, petty and frankly rather sad.

I think you are confusing ‘cool and trendy’ with ‘brand reputation’. They are two completely different things.
I very much doubt there are too many people out there daft enough to part with a large amount of cash simply because something ‘looks cool’. However, spending hundreds of dollars, pounds, rand or whatever on a product because you trust the brand name is a completely different animal and much more understandable.
