I totally agree. I think Apple’s productivity apps on iOS are phenomenal (particularly so when they first launched and were running on old single core devices with meagre amounts of RAM). They’re really underrated, look fantastic and have a great feature set.
One thing that amazes me, I’ve been using Word since the mid-‘90s and in all that time, inserting an image into a document still doesn’t work well. The image will jump about, go onto a new page, not sit where I dropped it and generally be a pain in the backside. Compare that to Pages where the image sits exactly where I put it (I can even rotate it to any desired angle!) and it’s all running on a low powered tablet.

If we’re using Red Dwarf, don’t forget Rimmer often called Lister a “gimboid”!

They create those large single archives so they can optimise streaming of data from a disc. As you say, developers are going to have to spend time working out how to split or demarcate areas of data that need to be downloaded first to allow early levels to be played. Woe betide the map designer that accidentally leaves a texture from a later level in level 1 that shouldn’t be there!
I expect Sony will have to make it mandatory for developers to implement this, otherwise I can see a lot of developers deciding they don’t have time to do it before release!
Another question I have is how open-world games like GTA or Saint’s Row will cope with this sort of thing. You can listen to all the radio stations, drive all over the place and initiate all sorts of sub-missions. I suspect players will have to wait longer for more data to download… either that or very slow, unskippable tutorial sections will become the norm! ;)
I’m actually surprised Sony are going down this route. I assumed they would just let the player play the game over Gaikai until it had downloaded and then just sync their save game over the cloud.
It’s the Xbox Infinity announcement tomorrow. I’m looking forward to seeing if MS are able to match all of Sony’s ideas and if they have some surprises up their sleeves or if all the leaks and rumours we’ve had so far are all they’re going to offer!
