Either way, this will be an option that can be turned off in software. There will be a huge backlash to it when it goes live and MS and Sony can’t have this be something that affects their console negatively through its lifetime.

You misread my comment. I know they talked about the interval. jaydib above claimed Microsoft said it was up to the publisher to either set that interval or not have it all. I haven’t seen that claim anywhere.

Please point out where Microsoft said phoning home at a set interval in order for your single player game to continue working is up to the publisher. You would have thought The Verge would have included it in the article above.

In order to calm what is obviously a serious concern in a lot of potential customers, Microsoft could have easily said it was up to the publishers, but they didn’t, did they?

Hmm…. If there were only some other major software model that installs and doesn’t require a disc, but also doesn’t require the internet…. Hmm….
Oh yeah, Windows and every other major OS you pay for. Almost all software requires an internet connection in order to install it, check serial numbers, etc, but that’s the end of the requirement. It’s basically digital distribution, even if you’re getting a physical disc. I have no problem with that part of it, and I’d assume most other people don’t either, because you can work around it.
But there are plenty of scenarios where you will just flat out not be able to use the xbox one, and that is because of something that provides zero benefit to the end user. Some people don’t have internet in their homes? Ok, they can take their console somewhere that does and install a game there, but then what happens when they bring it home and want to play for a week with no internet? Sorry, you can’t. And that part of it is completely unnecessary. Windows costs much more than a game, yet doesn’t need to phone home at a set interval in order to function. How, in any way, does requiring a checkin over the internet help me as a user? I don’t understand why people don’t get this.

Ok, so can you please explain to us “idiots” all the possibilities that their vague statement leaves open? Their purposely vague statement allows for a console that has to check in every 3 hours (thus not always connected) or your game will stop.
Is this how my smartphone works, “idiot”? No, not at all.

Sony was asked and gave a clear answer that internet won’t be required. Done.

Shocking news to entitled people…. not everyone in the world has internet in their homes!!!! The xbox one will be sold worldwide, just like the xbox 360 and every other console before it. The internet checkin requirement does not serve any purpose to enhance the user the user experience in any way. It actually hinders the end user experience and is only there to possible help the publishers and Microsoft.

Are you serious that you don’t understand this? You go to a place that has wifi, install the game, and then go to another place without wifi for a long time, say months, and play your games without needing the internet. You’re either being purposely thick or stupid if you don’t understand the problem people have with this.

You’re typing before thinking. Lack of internet doesn’t mean permanent lack of internet. I’ll go slow for you. I installed it in one location that has wifi before taking it to another location without wifi and stay there for a long time. Do you get it?

Please point me to the single player iPad game that requires an internet connection. None? Yeah, didn’t think so.

I don’t see how they can invalidate the first install. That would be a pretty weird customer service experience. Game working… game working… boom! No more game.

This sounds right. Otherwise, you could just have a group of 5 friends who all want the game, buy one copy, then pay the smaller fee for each of the 4 subsequent installs after the first. This is way too easy to game the system if it was offered at a discounted price.
Also, if they’re using serials to verify on install, which it seems like they must be doing, you must have an internet connection to install a game. Not nearly as bad as always on, but for some users, this could be an issue.
