I probably should have made it more clear that I’ve only had the experience of better functionality with applications that are designed primarily to retrieve and display/broadcast information from the Internet, such as the three mentioned above. Many apps perform processing functions with files on my device and a stand alone app is much more practical and a browser based app would make no sense. I guess to boil it down to a specific example – why is a YouTube app better than just accessing the YouTube website. I find navigating the site easier and things just seem to tun more smoothly. Thanks for mentioning that the browser is more susceptible to “infections”, I did not know that.

I don’t even understand why people want apps when you can access things with your browser. What’s the purpose of having apps for youtube, google maps, Amazon,….? The functionality is almost always better through the browser.

Hmm. I don’t remember them making that statement when they bought Flickr. I know they said “We look forward to working with them for their innovation and product development across the Yahoo Network in the coming months” which sounds more like – “We’re going to try and milk this thing, and we could really screw it up.”
