If you are on the fence about supporting Obama in November then this should give you a big nudge towards voting for Obama. This is the kind of principled, courageous leadership on issues that didn’t happen often enough in the first three years of his presidency. I just hope that after careful consideration, those companies who have a vested interest in a free and open internet put their money and prestige on the line to prevent the bastardization of the internet in the name of security.
I realize that the following example is a wildly exaggerated example of my point but the point remains valid. Germany was a democracy suffering from terrible economic and social chaos after the Great depression and losing World War I. All the people wanted was to feel safe and secure in a chaotic time when it felt like everything was falling apart. That is exactly what Hitler promised and they were willing to give up everything else for the sake of security. Don’t get me wrong, I believe that protecting cyber-security is in fact very important but not at the cost of sacrificing individual liberty and privacy any more than absolutely necessary and not without strong and effective protections from abuse are included. This bill is very far from that standard.
