Stocks is bad (too dark)

He more I look at them, the less I like them. Thankfully iOS7 is amazing, and tweaking the icons doesn’t seem that hard.

It’s like Justice Potter Stewart’s definition of pornography…“I shall not today attempt further to define the kinds of material I understand to be embraced within that shorthand description [”hard-core pornography"]; and perhaps I could never succeed in intelligibly doing so. But I know it when I see it"
I can’t tell you why most of why these icons look ugly together. Designers will try and define the rationale, and commenters like yourself will try to suggest that a lack of familiarity is the culprit.
Whether it is mathematics, or taste I can not tell you…but what I can tell you is the iOS 7 icons in their current form are downright ugly and in need of a makeover. I can’t explain why this is the case…it just is.

This…minus colors, and I’d be thrilled. I think the Black and White look is classy, save the colors for the budget iPhone.
And the fingerprint sensor will be Apple-fied, and will be a killer new feature. Everyone hates entering passwords constantly on their phones, Apple will nail this with iPhone 5s and iOS 7.

Your icons are better! I DO NOT UNDERSTAND how Apple allowed for such inconsistent, amateurish looking iconography to be presented in front of the world?
Simply put…if Steve Jobs was alive, this WOULD NOT HAVE HAPPENED! There, I said it! I know it is Taboo…but it is FUCKING TRUE. Steve Jobs once called Eric Schmidt, to ask if Google could change the shade of blue used in one of their iOS apps…Steve Jobs had amazing taste. I think Steve would have never allowed such inconsistent, tasteless icons to make it into Beta 1.

I think A LOT of people will agree with you. I totally see your point. I happen to be one who believes it is time to change OS X into something new. I believe it is time to move away from the “desktop metaphor” and into the new touch/voice/other input future. A lot of people think the desktop works just fine, so why change it? I think it is inevitable as the new generation grows up only knowing touch.

Currently running an early 2008 iMac 24inch. Recently the hard drive died, I swapped it out for an SSD and it runs better than the day I bought it! Now that Mavericks will run on this computer, I see no reason to upgrade…if it dies, I’ll get a new one.

Honestly, Mavericks seems like a bit of a dud. It is Mountain Lion with tags and tabbed finder (yawn). There are few niceties like better power management, notifications, and iCloud keychains…but I don’t think this is the kind of major “Ive” update that I think OS X needs.
Lets get real, iOS 7 required all hands on deck, and therefore OS X got neglected.
I don’t care what ANYONE says, I think OS X needs to be freshened up. It needs touch integration and it needs to get rid of that awful reflective dock. Something in between Mavericks and Windows 8 would be amazing…I have faith Apple is working on this, but with iOS in such need of attention in may be delayed will 2014 or 2015.
And don’t get me started on the name “Mavericks.” That is a TERRIBLE name…it is just a name, but come it…it is awful.

Agreed, but what cow-turd product did they release? IOS7 is radically different, and while it has a few ugly icons, some of these may be space holders. The iOS itself proves that Apple is not content to sit and stagnate. They did this in 8 months! That deserves praise, not pile-on criticism.

I agree with the OP. The problem is it is now in vogue to hate on Apple. I just never expected Josh and the Verge crew to pile on. It’s getting sad and boring.
Niley and crew will spend hours waxing on and on about the NSA, and Prism, but the WWDC coverage is short, shallow, and pile on journalism. It is getting pathetic.

In defense of airdrop, I have a feeling it will disappear like AirPlay when no one is around with a compatible iOS 7 device. So that should reduce clitter

Probably work in progress. It is beta. I heave a feeling the dock will even change before finale release to reflect the new iOS dock…at least I hope so, I’m so sick of that cheesy reflective dock and those stupid lights.

It’s beta. Actually, it feels like alpha. I downgraded my iPhone 4S in 45min.

I think the design “philosophy” is that iOS 7 exists on multiple sliding planes. In front, behind. I just don’t think it looks good yet. I’m sure on a 5s with the GM release it will make sense. The beta on my 4S is quite stuttery, and the slightest bit of stuttering makes the effect look gimmicky and cheap. It’s just a beta though, it should improve.

Wow, that contacts app looks sparse, and NOT in a good way! It lacks any sort of design sense. Like they striped the personality out of it, and replaced it with nothing.

Fair enough, I just don’t quite get it. What is the purpose? I’m thinking on an iPhone 5S, with a quad core processor, it will be smooth as butter and just make sense. But if it even slightly stutters, it throws off the effect and feels like a gimmick. It has to be perfect to make sense in my opinion.

a) I always found that betas get buggier and buggier with use as the days go on
b) What about App compatibility? There are some apps I cant live without.
c) What if I choose to go back to iOS 6, and I end up bricking my iPhone.
Trust me…every fiber in my being is begging me to upgrade my iPhone to iOS7 beta 1…but my higher brain is overriding my primal desires. This war will rage on, and by beta 3 I always give in.

If there was an iPad version, I be using it right now…I stopped putting iOS betas on my primary iPhone back with iOS 5, it just caused too many headaches. I can live with a buggy iPad, but not a buggy iPhone.

All it was was a good idea…it was painful to use. If it had a few years to develop, perhaps it could have blossomed…but it was never given that opportunity. The HP Touchpad was the worst $99 I ever spent…great ideas, terrible tablet.

It’s a beta. You can not judge until iOS 7 GM.
The fingerprint reader will get the Apple treatment. It will be good when it is released.

You’re going through a “the grass is always greener” phase. Trust me, it’s not. IOS 7 with its new gestures, multitasking, and security features on an iPhone 5s with a fingerprint sensor is going to be killer.
Google may have android…but Apple has Jony Ive. Jony won’t disappoint. The energy and time it took to transform iOS6—>iOS7 unfortunately meant features like actionable notifications, and glancable widgets didn’t make he cut. But they’ll be added in iOS 7.1 or iOS 8. Jony is on it.

I can see Apple giving it a cute “siri-like” name. Imagine you get your brand new iPhone 5S, and out of the box i says “place your finger on the home button.” With a cool animation, the phone assumes your identity and becomes the ultimate small personal computer. It is so personal, all you have to do is touch the home button and it unlocks. You could have the ability to ONLY unlock the phone with your password, even if wiped…or you could disable it altogether…granular levels of settings.
Apple would take the fingerprint sensor, and make it a mass market feature that my grandpa would be delighted to use. Just wait.
