That may be so, but the argument that because some words with a g in them use a “j” sound therefore gif must isn’t particularly sound either.

That may have been the creator’s original intention, but the wider populace has since appropriated the term and “gif” appears to be the widespread pronunciation. Another wonderful thing about the English language is that word pronunciation and usage changes and evolves over time.

To be completely honest people can call it either as far as I’m concerned. It’s like the spelling of “jail” versus “gaol” .
