But think about the professional environment as a whole company rather than just developers.
Take my company for example. We have hundreds of artists and a dozen developers making internal software for artists to use . Under Metro, we can’t deploy our own tools to our own machines (!!!) because it’s a closed platform.
It’s not a big deal with Windows 8 because it also ships with desktop (we can stick with GCC and continue making tools for desktop), but Windows 9 or 10 may not. Microsoft is obviously less committed to desktop environment because they want Metro to replace desktop entirely (they made that clear in the past, and this move is just one of their methods).
When that happens we have to hope that all the 3rd party tools we depend on have been ported to Linux or OSX, or stick with older software and older Windows.

Maybe google can help Raspberry Pi guys out by giving them manufacturing capacity? They’re already swimming in pre-orders and don’t know how to fill them.

This sort of argument is just silly.
Glossy screen with dark bezel, silver body with black keyboard, looks like MBP!
But MBP looks like hp dv2000!
hp looks like powerbook 500!
powerbook 500 looks like compaq lte!
compaq looks like grid computer!
grid looks like osborne!
All companies take design cues from competitors. Once in a while a company will introduce something that clicks with consumers and similar products will flourish. It happens all the freaking time. Being a fan of a company or defending a company for being the first one to market (or popularize) is simply ridiculous, and I don’t know why it happens so often with Apple users.
You think I’m a fan of Sharp and every other TV manufacturer is copycat because Sharp was the first to make LCD television? The very idea is childish and ridiculous.

I’ve been using it with Win7 at home. It works fine. Some apps and games don’t respect this setting but that’s to be expected.

HP’s “ultrabook” Envy Spectre is the only one out there that has macbook pro quality display. heck, even macbook airs don’t have macbook pro quality display (covers less than 70% srgb space). If intel really wanted to make ultrabooks stand above macbook airs, they should’ve made screen quality as part of the minimum specifications.

Have you tried it? If so, how is the key travel? Does it have satisfying click or any sort of tactile feedback, or is it depressing mush like all chiclet keyboards?

Doesn’t seem like IPS unfortunately. 3rd photo in the hands-on gallery shows some color inversion going on at off angles.

Yeah, that’s a bit disappointing. I can forgive them for putting chiclet in the new x1 carbon – it’s supposed to be very thin. Doing that to the rest of the line up is unforgivable.

I’d argue that the change was more for customer satisfaction rather than bad press – imagine if you’re a new iphone owner and casually asked siri what the best smartphone was. You’d want the affirmation that you made the right choice rather than to beat yourself over a possible mistake.

Yes, considering that 1K (1024×768) plasma TVs cost more than this only 10 years ago, not a bad start.

I agree (photography part). Not to generalize too much, but amateur photographers tend to care more about self image than feature set. They wouldn’t be caught dead with Samsung DSLR or mirrorless in their hands.

Yup. He definitely didn’t set the settings correctly. He interpreted 270 degree shutter as 1/270 shutter speed. It wasn’t a typo, because the footage reflects it, and his ISO settings reflect this mistake as well.
I didn’t read the rest of the neogaf thread to see if he corrected his mistake and uploaded newer footage, but there you go. 48 fps is supposed to look a lot more fluid than the above gif animation indicates.

Interesting. I’m wondering though if the person who shot this footage didn’t set the shutter angles properly. I’m looking at it frame by frame and there’s very little motion blur. If he shot it with 270 degree shutter like The Hobbit, there should be significant amount of blur.

That’s awesome. You get to retain the 3-year warranty even after you swapped out the display panel?
I’ve been eyeing x220 for a while, being a bit of Thinkpad fanboy. I only wish they put IPS panels into some of their more performance-oriented models, like X1.
