You’re saying that over a hundred million people are using iPads and suffering in silence.
I know that’s likely the case because I came very close to just keeping my iPad mini and tolerating it. I’m glad I didn’t though.

@Lomifeh
Not necessarily. Since this isn’t a defect, like with Apple Maps, nor a moral issue, like the banning of an app, people won’t attack Apple for it. Instead, they will blame themselves for not shopping more carefully, or they’ll assume all tablets have the same problem and just tolerate it.
Most iPad users probably do experience eye strain, but they’re too embarrassed to admit it. They don’t want to look like suckers because they bought a device thinking it was high-quality when it actually has a low-quality display on it.

Feel free to explain how someone with good eyesight would not be affected by type of reflections an air gap creates.

I experienced eye strain even in a dark room with the brightness turned down to the minimum.

No, you’re misinterpreting the results. The scores only indicate how much light is being reflected back. They don’t take in account how it’s being reflected back. It’s the way an air gap reflects light that causes the eyes to have trouble focusing. The amount of light being reflected is the other factor in eye strain.

The reflectance scores only show how much light is being reflected back. They don’t indicate how the light is being reflected back, which is what an air gap affects. The air gap reflections are more annoying because the differences between them are greater.

I doubt that. I don’t see how some people couldn’t be affected by this. The difference between the reflections is significant.

This is from DisplayMate:
Mirror (specular) reflections from display screens can be very annoying because they are superimposed images that compete with the LCD image. Plus the eye automatically tries to focus on the distant reflected images instead of the LCD. Both of these effects cause eye strain. Because the screens are made up of multiple layers of glass and plastic they actually produce multiple reflections from light bouncing off each of the different layers.
So, a display with an air gap will obviously produce more irritating reflections than a laminated display since the air gap makes the differences between the reflections greater, and the overall image fuzzier.

I posted that quote to show that other people have experienced eye strain when using a mini. I don’t think he understood that it was the air gap that caused his eye strain. He doesn’t actually blame anything specifically, like the DPI, just the poor display in general.

It isn’t laminated.

The Kindle Fire HD and and Nexus 7 both have their Cover Glass bonded directly to the LCD so there is no Air Gap like on the iPad mini, which has 3 widely separated reflections. The lack of an Air Gap helps to reduce the Reflectance for Ambient Light.

(There’s an error on the article’s main page that says it is laminated.)

I noticed the strain immediately, but I just assumed it was normal and I would get used to it. About 2 weeks later, I noticed my eyes would relax as soon as I switched to my desktop’s glossy LCD, so I knew it was just the mini.

That’s what irritates me. They bragged about removing air gaps in the iPhone, but they have them in the iPads, where reading comfort is even more important. They’re just cutting corners here.

From DisplayMate:
The new iPad and iPad 2 have the thickest screens with an internal air gap between the cover glass and the actual LCD screen. The iPhone 4 has the cover glass laminated to the LCD screen so there is no air gap and no third reflection as in the other Tablets. This is one reason for the iPhone 4’s lower screen reflectance.

Most people probably aren’t complaining because they’re wrongly assuming, as I did, that the strain was just from the glossiness or the backlight, and couldn’t be avoided. I bet there are a lot of iPad owners that are avoiding their iPads, as I was, without really knowing why.

It still bothered me even with my glasses on.
All the iPads have air gaps. You can tell just by looking at the reflections when they’re off. Here’s a picture of the 3rd gen from DisplayMate:

I hope it isn’t, but I suspect it is. Here’s a quote from Cult of Mac’s iPad mini review:
I can’t tell you how much I dislike this display. It’s inexcusably bad. I’m a person who stares at computer screens all day long, and after using my iPad mini for an hour, I found that my eyes were actually hurting. I actually wanted to get away from the iPad mini’s display. That’s a big problem: Apple makes immersive products that suck you in. The iPad mini’s display actually pushes you away.
