Sort of, I doubt Microsoft is ready to turn the Xbox into a full fledged PC

I think part of the reason for the re-architecture of the Xbox, and lesser extent changes in WinRT,was to make certain scenarios like Xbox PC gaming an easier thing to do from the developer perspective.

Why? They could just open source Trident

Has anyone thought that at least part of this being unclear is around certain aspects of this not being finalized. While I think a lot of this Always on stuff will be more about tying the digital part of the game to your account than to the disk, some of the other details may be thrown out to see how people react. I don’t think Microsoft wants to get into a tussle with Best Buy and others over physical media and resales. I do think Microsoft is thinking about moving the Xbox from just being tied to a console.

Pushing the Xbox as a gaming platform across all screen was the one thing I thought would be announce Tuesday. The parts are there, but its the implementation that will be tricky. I would love for the Xbox to really compete with Steam on the PC and really become a compelling feature on Windows Phone.

It has taken a long time but the 3 screens Microsoft has talked about since at least PDC 2009 is coming together. I do think that the future of Microsoft looks a lot like the Xbox One, in fact it would be interesting to see if soon we see the work done by the Xbox team bleed over to the Surface and Windows proper.
One thing to remember is the Xbox One already shares a lot in common with Windows and Windows Phone; according to Mary Jo Foley all share some form of WinRT. Also with Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 Microsoft has been pushing C++ and DirectX for gaming on both platforms.
I think the first test for the 3 Screen strategy will be how the One uses Smart Glass. I just watched a video in which Marc Whitten at Microsoft talked about having up to 16 devices running Smart Glass at the same time and that the new architecture allows the Xbox to render directly on a Smart Glass enabled device. So that could mean a scenario similar to the Nintendo Wii U could happen on a Surface or iPad.

Only thing standing in IE10’s(and 11’s) way are web developers that ignore it. The NY Times is redoing its web site and I signed up for the Beta. I log in on IE, MODERN IE and it says to try FireFox, Safari, or Chrome. I get that IE6 was a mess (it wasn’t alone) but still.

Re-watching the architecture panel yesterday I get the sense that the Xbox team will be leveraging the cloud with the One and that could be the equalizer. Imagine a developer being able to have some parts on the device and having other elements running on the server. I think that is one of the main reasons the One has the Always on aspect.

Okay I put the game into the One and the game (in digital form) is tied to my Microsoft account. The physical copy can be sold or shared, the digital copy will just be a part of my account history. That is what I meant; apologies for being unclear.

I really think that the Xbox One will work like Windows 8; games will be tied to the user and follow the user across devices. If this is the case it wouldn’t matter if you sold the game because it would be part of your profile.

Before Microsoft, SONY, or even Apple can lead a revolution anywhere you would have to have the content to attract customers. There would have to be companies with content willing to take a chance on moving away from tried and true revenue structures. Second, they would have to find a way for everyone to get paid.

From what’s been said so far it looks like the Xbox team is adopting what the Windows team is doing with apps; tying them to your account. When the One takes the information of the disk, the game is tied to you the user and not the device. This is similar to Windows where apps are tied not to the device but the user.

Why?
Because as much as I like reading through the Tribe’s views we have a tendency to go overboard when we feel like the Verge’s writer exhibit a bias or dislike for Microsoft and its products. Its something I’ve done too so I am not calling folks out. I am also not accusing anyone of anything particular just pointing out behavior.

My hope is that the new architecture of the One along with it using Windows 8 means they use WinRT. It would give Windows 8 and RT a boost and move Microsoft closer to write-once/run anywhere. My worry is as with Windows 8 is developers wanting to JUST write once and not optimize. My other worry is that they don’t use all of WinRT and limit it to HTML and C++, XAML needs love too.

Its about applications not gaming. With a growing percentage using the Xbox for thing other than gaming apps are important.
