You still have to actually look at your phone. Going by Vlad’s score, ergonomics are 70% of design.

It’s not necessarily peer pressure. When others you know have applications you can’t have access to it does create a disconnect because everyone’s not going to adjust just for your sake.
I’m encouraged to see people enjoying their Lumias. I hate to see a quality OS go to waste.
they don’t buy Android phones, they buy HTC’s, Samsungs’ etc
I agree. Most people I see people using Android devices and they don’t even know it’s running Android. It’s a good sign because it means there are potential switchers.

The problem is that Ballmer is lacking in so many areas no one knows what he’s compensating for.

MS is fighting against what the iPad is going to be and not what it is today.
The problem for MS, since W8 was shown, is that there is a lot of confusion of it’s supposed to be. There doesn’t seem to be a clear direction in where they’re heading.

What incentive does Samsung have for forking Android?
In a couple of years Open Street Maps will be as good as Google Maps if not better Why? Because Apple and every other company who would not put up with Google’s high fees for Maps are now using it and much of the information is crowd source.
Why would Samsung do it? Why would they let Google get ad revenues when Samsung can have it. Samsung can leverage their own ad service over Open Street Maps just like Google does.
Samsung has already shown the willingness to strike exclusivity deals with developers (see Flipboard.)
Samsung isn’t selling Android (see Touchwiz.) They’re selling the Samsung ecosystem. (Ex: Samsung’s Airplay only works with Samsung TVs)

Why?
1. They have their own ad network.
2. They have their own Airplay.
3. They have their own music sercvice.
4. They have their own voice recognition.
5. They have their own app store.
6. They have their own cloud solution.
All they’re missing is their own calendar, email, contact and mapping solution.
just for the sake of personalization?
It’s about money. When is it about anything else?

There is extraordinary value to buying a phone and using your Facebook login as your main ID.
Facebook would have to come out with their own OS or phone just because they are playing under Apple’s and Google’s rules and limitations when it comes to app stores and browsers (at least with Apple.)
Facebook needed to come out with these apps regardless of whether they’re building a phone or not.
Imagine the potential if they flip and switch and turn on a mobile app store that runs all the Facebook desktop apps as standalone apps (yet fully integrated with Facebook behind the scenes) on a phone.
Do you mean web apps? I think it remains to be seen if anyone can convince a user to go in that direction anymore. It certainly seems like customers prefer native apps.
Sure, it’s all just theory right now, but it would certainly explain why Apple is so quick to build Twitter into iOS but wants nothing to do with Facebook.
I think Twitter is one aspect to Apple’s plan. I think the other aspect is some kind of iCloud social network for iOS users. You may say it will pale in comparison (in numbers) to Facebook but so did Instagram. It also will have the added privacy advantage over Facebook and will probably offer a better mobile app solution which Facebook is sorely lacking.

This is funny. In three years Google fans will say they killed Flash just like they say today that Android didn’t rip off the iPhone and what they said in 2007 about no one wanting to type on glass.
