But if the character was obese and shown to be even more overweight, Disney would receive praise from the “love your body, love yourself” crowd, despite the tremendous risks of being overweight and the overweight adolescent epidemic America has.

The joy in seeing Spotify in the headline can only be expressed in relation to the disappointment when I read Pandora in the headlines of articles about Apple’s upcoming music service. The Pandora radio-style service is a great supplement to a Spotify-like service, but being unable to create playlists of songs I want to hear makes Apple’s rumored service a non-starter for me. If all this pans out, Google is well ahead of the curve that Apple is trailing behind on.

It’s not just the generosity from sharing his wealth, Bill Gates could simply cut checks to help fund world changing initiatives. It’s how deeply he is investing himself as a resource, in a way orchestrating the work that is saving lives, that I find to be so admirable and inspiring. His involvement and influence is of equal or greater value to his monetary contribution.

Are people more likely to leave it on, occasionally turning it off. Or are they more likely to turn it off, and turn it on when they want to show someone how it works?
I’m not saying it’s gimmicky, but if it isn’t something that people find they want on more often than not, it feels like a feature that is simply being used for the sake of differentiation.

They have okay hardware. Paperwhite is the only innovative piece of hardware that I can give them credit for, everything else is pretty generic.

Exactly.
The traditional PC has evolved over time, hardware in relation to software. It’s illogical to adopt a radically new interface that was developed for a new form of user interaction that’s dependent on abandoning the traditional mouse and keyboard in favor of touch. If Microsoft can make a touch OS that is better on a traditional PC that uses a mouse and keyboard, than the OS it has been evolving for decades, then that touch OS is making too many compromises.
Microsoft is trying to build the amphibious car of operating systems.

I was really enthusiastic, leading up to Windows 8 and the launch of Surface RT/Pro. Withering some, I still planned on buying some hardware running Windows 8 within the first six months. This article has just reminded me that my enthusiasm has come and gone, and nothing about Windows 8 or the run of hardware designed with it in mind, has been that compelling.
To regain my interest, Microsoft will need to reach the point where it is full committed to leaving the desktop interface for good, or rethink it and axe the Start Screen. Until then, Metro/NUI will be the “Easy Mode” and the desktop will continue to be a crutch.

I believe there is value in explaining where a company focused resources when developing a new product, if the reviewer feels that other important areas were neglected. Can you imagine how incredible this phone could be if Samsung put as much effort and thought into hardware design and materials as they did in features that, too be honest, are little more than bar tricks for salesmen at phone stores to show off.

It’s not just the design, it’s the cheapness that seems to kill this thing from being an attractive contender to the HTC One.
