I knew this was coming due to the Vocaloid and Hatsune Miku tags.

For reference, the term otaku was mostly coined as a ‘freak’ of something, there are many types of otaku, ranging from military nuts to maid craze, it’s just in the last decade that anime/manga has been associated by mainstream people to the otaku culture.

Also my circle calls me an otaku by your definition of the word except I have a normal girlfriend that’s fine with it, reason behind is due to the fact that she has monopoly over me due to my interests in 2D. Win-win situation if you know how to play it out :D
