This was stated by RIM a long time ago. It is necessary and not unreasonable at all. Look to Apple devices that cannot be updated. The MS Windows Mobile devices that can’t run Windows Phone. Android devices that can’t be upgraded to the newest versions. It has to happen with big software and OS changes.
I hope that there will still be an updated version of the 9900 style devices running the current OS if they are going to continue to offer the old OS for the while. It NEEDS a better battery but really is a solid smartphone.
