Our Nissan Leaf is powered only 7.6% from coal. Over half of the electricity I use is from Natural Gas. 16% Nuclear, 12% Hydro and 9.6% Non-Hydro Renewables. I’d say in many circumstances the environmental impact is undoubtedly less than a gasoline-powered car. Environmental issues aside, I also prefer that the propulsive energy of that car is produced here in the US with no dependence on raw materials from hostile regions of the world.
