The girl in the profile image is not me. I "stole" this image from some Korean website. By the way, though he has turned himself a fat-belly guy nowadays, in good ol'days John Sykes was the guitarist who used to remind you a lion with tough jaw and blonde mane. Hmm... at least, though it's not black hair, she has a long and shiny hair John Sykes used to have when he was much younger.

I use Nova Launcher on my S4. The only widget I have found incompatible with Nova so far is the stock weather widget which I liked very much. Except that specific widget all the widgets seem to be compatible with Nova. Also, as gollyzila mentioned, status bar is not transparent any more.

Though it’s not a specific problem found only from the Verge articles, reading some articles of the Verge sometimes makes me suspect that the writers are not wealthy in knowledge on the tech itself. I understand that they are not engineers but they should have some minimum understanding of the tech. They sometimes write just like emotional hipsters who don’t know the meaning of what happened in the industry at all.
That’s all very well, but it’s not Samsung’s job to define industry terms.
This sentence from the article is actually ridiculous. It’s written as if Samsung is doing what they are not permitted to do or doing their work in some arrogant fashion. The standards for the near future are not determined overnight by the committee without any reference to the reality. To decide what the standards have to include and what not, the current progress on the related technology and the projection regarding future innovation based on the current progress should be taken into consideration. Samsung, like the other companies, is showing to the industry that the technical boundary for the next-gen tech is expanded this much by the advancement with some specific technology. It’s just the natural step.
Usually the standards for the more consumer-market-centric products are determined by a group of big companies unlike the infrastructure related standards like this 5G case where the state government gets involved. Even for the standards determined by the governments, big players provide the technical background to the committee. They sometimes even become one of the principal agent for determining the standards when allowed. Anyway, big companies in network/communications field are already in the race toward 5G standards now. What Samsung and the other companies are doing now is the necessary part for the 5G standards to be determined. Still, the tech writer says doing what should be done is not their job. This is really weird sentence to see from the tech news sites like the Verge.

Like you said, Touchwiz launcher probably has some problems. I have Korean variant of GS4. Though I didn’t notice any kind of lag from the stock Touchwiz launcher but as soon as I installed the Nova launcher, it worked as if the super-fast turbo mode is on. I guess Touchwiz launcher loads some unnecessary processes.

To validate the point of your so-called “real world performance”, at least the devices being tested and compared should go through at least same unified test procedure. That is actually just the minimum in that the test/comparison can be objective. With some random usage and no description of what’s been done with the device before the test, and saying like “It’s not impressive at all. See this test result.” doesn’t imply anything objective. Even with the information provided, still the direct comparison can’t be objective much. The throttling optimizations and settings are different among OEMs because the combinations of components are all different and OEMs has their own standard and priority for the user experience. Some OEM can value media playing function most while some OEM can put highest priority on the web browsing. That’s why usually the best scores showing raw power of the device are compared because at least those scores can be used as the reference showing the potential of the device power in real world user experience.

This is the quadrant score of my Exynos Octa powered Galaxy S4. It seems the score from your friend’s GS4, especially CPU score is strangely low when compared to mine. CPU score of my GS4 is 41862 while your friend’s score is just 26436. Scores may go up and down a bit in accordance with the status of memory occupied and processes running. Also, the temperature of the device influence the test even before the automatic throttling activated. However, even considering that, CPU score of your friend’s is too low.

@theverge: Engadget updated the article.
In short, this accident happened while they were upgrading the infrastructure to make it safer.
http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/02/samsung-chip-plant-accident/
Update: Samsung has been in touch to say that the acid leak wasn’t in gas form, as Yonhap (and we) initially reported, and that the injured workers were contractors hired by Samsung rather than staff:
At approximately 11:30 a.m. on May 2, three external contract workers were partially exposed to diluted hydrofluoric acid at Samsung’s semiconductor manufacturing facility in Hwaseong, Korea. The workers received immediate first aid attention on site and were admitted to hospital for further examination. This occurred while the workers were upgrading parts of an existing facility in line with Ministry of Employment and Labor requirements. Samsung has reported the incident to the appropriate local authorities and is fully cooperating with investigations. We take the health and safety of workers very seriously and are committed to addressing any issues regarding the well-being of those working in our facilities.

I would like to see this sort of Apple article in the Verge really. Why the Verge doesn’t get serious about Apple like they would do at any time about Samsung? Apple is an American company beloved by Americans and most portion of their cash is deposited in overseas to avoid US tax. Even with the tons of cash, they borrow money to give dividends to shareholders. It’s really strange, isn’t it? At least, the Verge doesn’t seem to care because they are so busy in search of Samsung related news for daily dose of flame bait.

I understand how the conspiracy theory is made and grow bigger. You have some creative imagination and googling ability. I guess you can make good one if you try harder. /s
John Sykes is one of my favorite guitarists and I took that name as ID for Engadget and the Verge. This traces back to when I made my Xbox live ID. I named it after my favored John Sykes then. I made that ID for the original Xbox-era live and that was even before Xbox360 was released let alone Samsung started to manufacture smartphone. He’s still in my music library even though I recently moved him from iPhone 4 to Galaxy S4. You’ll know what I meant with the images below in case you heard lots of 80’s hairbands.

It’s really strange that some tech site like the Verge is turning into the place full of suspicion these days. It’s somewhat sad I have to prove myself against the conspiracy-level suspicion.
Well, you may not believe still. Then, why don’t you visit that SYKES Enterprise and look for me. I’ll buy you lunch if you find me there.

Did I say this is not important article? I pointed out that while the Verge doesn’t deal with the tech news like the mass production of 20nm-process mobile LPDDR3 DRAM, they are very quick to post the bad news of Samsung as cheap flame bait. Samsung is not perfect company. What I can’t stand is that some tech news sites, usually pro-Apple ones, has started to show disappointing behavior recently. They fuel the fanboy wars and the hatred toward some specific company. Don’t you see that? I usually post comments on Samsung related articles/posts but what I most do in the case are correcting misinformation. Emitting hatred and mocking Samsung makes everyone of the Verge happy? I don’t think so. Someone feels uneasiness.

Really? That angelic company used to deduct the sunk cost for defective units from the pay of the worker who assembled those. That’s why Foxconn workers keep trying suicides. Just a few of defective iPhone units would make his/her monthly pay practically zero. You have gone too far to give a bad name to Samsung.

Anti-Samsung? I don’t know whether the Verge has gone that far but it’s still true that you can’t read the article like the below in the Verge. (FYI, they had posted 30nm-process LPDDR3 article last year.)
http://www.engadget.com/2013/04/30/samsung-20nm-4gb-lpddr3-ram/
I use Appy geek app everyday which collects all the tech news from various tech news sites. Almost all the tech sites reported the news. Even, thenextweb which focusing less on gadgets and hardwares reported it.
Regarding the review, did you read the Verge’s review on GS4? I don’t care how high or low score the device gets as long as it makes sense and it is legitimate. But I think the reviewer used so much subjective words and expression which seems inappropriate emotional in the review to my standard. That’s why I got disappointed recently.
Just observe the Verge closely, you would read that trend.

The Verge seems to have interest only in the negative news of Samsung as flamebait. They didn’t post any article regarding the mass production of 4Gb 20nm-process LPDDR3 by Samsung which almost all tech site reported. But they are quick to report the article like this. I know it has lots of Apple fans and HTC fans among staffs as well as readers but this gets somewhat disappointing these days.

No, you just want to believe it sounds like that.
Nearly 16,000 of you asked Samsung whether its smartphones contained tin that’s destroying forests, coral reefs and livelihoods.
The part you quoted is already in the article I included in my previous reply, though it’s not exactly same.
I never intended anything. Just wanted to add the follow-up information to this thread. I even included the website’s URL.
Yeah, I know well what you wanted to say. Keep doing it as usual.

Samsung admitted it and announced that it will look for industry-wide solution. Now, the target falls upon Apple which refused to answer unlike Samsung. Next in line, probably LG, Huawei, ZTE, etc. according to the smartphone sales chart of Q1 2013.

Samsung admits using Bangka tin – will Apple?
19 April 2013
Thanks to your messages we’ve forced Samsung to take a long, hard look at its supply chain. Now it’s time for Apple to play catch-up.
Nearly 16,000 of you asked Samsung whether its smartphones contained tin that’s destroying forests, coral reefs and livelihoods.
The world’s biggest-selling smartphone brand has now written to customers admitting that it uses tin from the Indonesian island of Bangka.
And it’s also publicly committed to find an industry-wide solution to end the damage.
Will Apple reveal all?
It’s fantastic that Samsung is facing up to problems in its supply chain. But Apple – Samsung’s fiercest rival – is still refusing to answer your questions.
Apple is already playing catch-up on the high street in terms of smartphone sales – it’s time it followed Samsung’s lead by coming clean about its whole supply chains too.
Craig Bennett, Director of Policy and Campaigns
Your messages can force Apple to tell the truth about the tin in its phones too.
Please ask Apple to come clean about whether it uses tin from Bangka in its smartphones.

The proof Samsung knew the fact before buying from the Chinese and South Pacific supply chain? To make your statement vaild, HTC has to recall all the Ones sold containing Nokia-exclusive component, even if they didn’t know the fact at all. Don’t you think so? It’s said that HTC don’t need to because they bought the components from STMicro “in good faith.”

It’s just my speculation but real-time image/video synthesis from two cameras would require firmware level control. Thus, I don’t think you can find the app with same function at least for the time being unless OEM updates the firmware. It’s beyond the reach of ordinary app developer actually. Maybe some custom ROMs would come up with the function later. Also, it will require processing power much to function properly. Unless it’s high-end device, it will be practically useless even after the necessary firmware update, I guess. I hope Google include this feature in KLP in the future.
