A single 40-nanometer chip contains both the CPU and GPU
Well, this is disappointing.

At least the Temash tablet APU is very promising, with a iGPU at the level of the HD4000 and amazing power efficiency.
Let’s not get too far ahead of ourselves. Temash looks like an interesting low cost option, but it won’t actually be competing with SNB CPUs and IVB GPUs, it’ll be competing with HSW. And within 6 months Bay Trail will show up in the sub-5W space and offer similar performance, with significantly better battery life at the same prices.

at this volume i dont think it would be worth it for MS or Sony to make it themselves. those chip making factories are quite expensive!
I honestly didn’t think it was necessary to point out that MS and Sony aren’t going into the foundry business. That seems to me like reminding someone that Apple isn’t going to start building the freighters that carry it’s products around the world.
Assuming that the “Steam Box” uses an APU, a safe assumption (though considering HSW’s R-series chips and Intel’s superior Linux drivers, hardly the sure thing it once was), it should sell in significantly lower volumes than either console.

Low margin certainly. There’s some debate as to whether AMD is actually selling APUs to Sony and MS, or just licensing the design to them, and collecting royalties.
AMD doesn’t have any older fab equipment, they don’t have any fabs at all.
It’s unlikely that these chips are being fabbed on an older process, both Jaguar, and GCN 1.1 were designed with 28nm and newer nodes in mind.

Are we really to the point already where x86-powered machines are to be looked at as obsolete technology?
Only if your worldview is narrow enough to think that all computing needs can be met with a smartphone and a MacBook Air.

It’ll help, but probably not much.
Remember, consoles are a low volume business. The 360 and PS3 combined sold about 160MM units in ~7.5 years. The PC industries sell that many in 2 quarters. Never mind the mobile market.

You’re still not reading.
Someone has posted cTDP up specs for the HSW U-series chips on Wikipedia.
A CPU using the cTDP up state has different base clocks than one using the standard TDP.
And from where did you get the GPU consumption ??
The link I posted. They have platform power consumption for GPU tasks. If you subtract idle power from load power you can get a rough estimate of the power draw for various tasks.
From the link
It seems that the power consumption of the GPU is significantly higher. Although FurMark only slightly loads the CPU, the power consumption differs by more than 10.9 Watt.

Notice how you choose to compare the iPad, not the iPad mini.
Despite your insistence that DPI has a relation to aspect ratio, both iPad have the same AR, yet drastically different DPIs.
You’re comparing a high DPI device and a low DPI device and trying to claim it has something to do with aspect ratios.
