But why would anybody even begin to think that there’s a possibility that the 3DS would be selling as well as iPhone? They’re competing in the sense that they are both portable and both able to play games, but I was speaking strictly of sales. Looking at the charts, I’m not even seeing anything out of the ordinary. DS sales went down in the end of the generation, 3DS sales are rising (faster than the DS did when it first came out, even), and iPhone sales are of course rising. It’s a phone. It’s necessary to have for almost everybody, so having a sale comparison chart is unnecessary.

I can’t help but wonder, why on earth are you (the writer of this article) even comparing sales of iPhone to handheld game systems? Handheld game systems are a hobby; phones are a necessity. A popular phone will always sell more than a popular handheld game system, and nobody expects that it wouldn’t. It just seems silly to even compare the two.

Actually, you are wrong. Vita games would not be able to run on the new iPad, or really even get close. There are a number of reasons why. Firstly, the GPU – the new iPad has the same GPU as the Vita, but the new iPad has to use that GPU to push over four times the amount of pixels. This alone makes a huge difference. But along with the GPU, the Vita has another huge advantage, and that is 128MB of dedicated video RAM to go along with it. In terms of the CPU, we only know that the new iPad is dual core and the Vita is quad core. I won’t say who has the advantage on that front, as we don’t much much information on the Vita’s CPU in terms of clock speed. There are other advantages. The Vita OS has a lower memory foothold than the iPad, meaning that more RAM can go towards the games. Also, Vita has some fantastic low-level APIs for games that make it futureproof at least for the next couple of years.
