Maybe because Microsoft expected us to do that, so much so that they force us in to the Metro environment to launch absolutely anything? If Microsoft believed we should use Desktop apps at a Desktop, they’d have given us a way to launch them from there, which is what 8.1 will address.
No, I didn’t, because when commercials come on I stop watching TV and go to the fridge and grab a drink, or go to the bathroom, or channel flip. This doesn’t do enough to pull my attention back, so I hear Siri, think iPad and move on with my day.
I don’t have a dog in the fight, since I don’t work for or own stock in either company. I’m also not defending Microsoft – in fact, I think this ad is counter productive.
For the record, I agree this ad will only help iPad sales, mostly because consumers barely retain commercials anyway, so making something that looks so much like an iPad ad, featuring an iPad, the voice of Siri, and music they used in an iPad ad will probably only reinforce the Apple image. But, I’m also of the school that Microsoft should be selling me on why I want a Surface and not why I don’t want an iPad.
