AMG cars are not racecars. Why? Because they came out with the Black Series. This is basically an admission that the “standard” AMG brand has gotten so diluted that they’re really nothing more than just a top-end trim. They’re fast, for sure, but like BMW M (another brand recently destroyed) they’re not targeted for hardcore racers/drivers anymore. They’re targeted towards rich people who want to say they have the best and therefore, despite the cars being immensely capable, they’re not meant to be driven on the track – they’re fast road cars. The hardcore racers would rather do without a sunroof, leather seats, a navigation system, etc. and put all the money into pure performance. That’s what the AMG Black Series and the M3 GTS are for. Those are track-focused cars and you’ll notice that they have no luxury features. But the market for a $140,000 3-series without air conditioning is quite small.
