I’m sure there are several strategic reasons to ask for authorization to use military force as opposed to a declaration of war, but an important factor is that a “War” requires a much more official end than mere “military activities”. If those military confrontations are with another country (ie: Iraq) the geneva convention applies as long as the other nation signed the convention or applies it even without signing. The issue becomes where conflicts are with non-state actors who do not agree to apply the conventions standards.

Geneva Convention does not apply to all wars or hostilities. It applies to officially declared wars between nations in which one is a signatory; armed conflicts between signatory nations; and armed conflicts between a signatory nation and another nation accepts and applies the provisions of the protocols.

My understanding is that with regard to land claimed as originally Palestinian, the conventions only apply if the land was confiscated from another signatory nation or a nation that has accepted and applied the Geneva conventions. I’m not sure if there even was a “nation” in the legally recognizable meaning of the term, and I can’t find any evidence of that nation signing or recognizing the terms of the Geneva Convention. I am sorry for not including my reasoning before.

if that is the case, than Israel’s wars with Syria and Lebanon never ended, there was merely agreements for the cessation of hostilities. You can’t dismiss the differences as semantics and technicalities and after making the point that they should have issued the declaration in the first place.

This is exactly what has been going on in the West Bank, and you are correct, it is working. Compare the hostility level there with what is coming out of Gaza (where there are no economic development plans supported by Israel because Hamas and Israel refuse to work together).

and even that is only looking back to very recent times. Historically, that land has been fought over and conquered numerous times by jews, arabs, european christians, I’m sure I’m leaving someone significant out.

People shouldn’t romanticize history as this simpler better time.
