By using the anecdata to say it’s a way for EA to protect their investment. It’s an argument which only works if you assume that the gained sales from the people who would otherwise have pirated it outweigh the lost sales from the people who don’t want to be dependant on EA/their ISP/their router/etc to play an offline game.
We don’t know what the gained/lost sales numbers actually are, but I’m pretty sure that having been publicly named as the worst company in America has to carry a pretty hefty hit in terms of goodwill/PR costs.
