Given that we had plenty of light and fantastic glass, the two cameras made a great team.

I certainly wouldn’t rule it out. I’d love an opportunity to get even closer.

How long were you waiting before the Shuttle made an appearance?
We wanted to be setup, ready for photos by 9:30, so by the time Enterprise flew by I guess we had been in position for about an hour and a half.
How long did it take for the Shuttle to disappear from view?
We got two good passes from the shuttle over the Hudson. We had about three minutes or so in the “butter zone.” The SCA flies slower than your average 747, but once it passed our position, the aircraft got smaller quickly.
So glad you enjoyed the post!

Unfortunately we didn’t have access to a D800. Honestly I think we might’ve gone with the D4 anyway though. Given the 400mm focal length we were using on that body we wanted to have as many options as possible when it came time to make selections, and the rapid fire capability of the D4 was just what we needed.
The sensor on the D4 is more than adequate for heavy cropping and web publishing. If on the other hand we were planning to grab photos to make massive prints (i.e. prints measured in feet and not inches), the D800 would have been an obvious choice.
Also, just as an aside, I think it remains to be seen just how much of a benefit 36 megapixels really is on a 35mm sensor.

Shooting speed was certainly a consideration. Also, we happen to have the D4 on loan from Nikon right now and wanted to put it through its paces. Alas, we don’t have a D800 in the house.
The 36 megapixel resolution of the D800 is impressive, but that only really comes in handy for web publishing when you need to crop a lot. We rented the 400mm lens to avoid drastic crops in post. It allowed David to focus on getting tight shots while I got more environmental shots.
In the end, we also just wanted to take the two most capable bodies (and the best glass) in the house, which meant the D4 and the 5D2.

David was shooting, too. Gotta have two people to really cover something like this because it happens so fast.
