With photography what matters is what you are trying to communicate, it’s what you are observing. This focus on aesthetics and technology is secondary and a distraction. You have to recognize what a tool can do for you and instagram can be use to take a quick snap and share it (like old film disposables) while your tried a tested camera (film or digital) is what gives you artistic control. Actually instagram is getting more people interested in actual polaroids and they are recognizing the differences. As camera phones get better image quality especially dealing with dynamic range, you will see less dependency on filters because people actually just want to share what they are observing.
