MightyText on Android. Works on my PC, my Mac, my iPad, my Nexus 7 all through the their website. You install the app on your phone and their website routes the texts and mms through your phone but you can send them from any device your sitting at as long as your phone has a data connection. They even have a Chrome plugin that pops up your texts while sitting at your PC/Mac, very similar to iMessage but works across platforms, IF you have an Android phone. You of course still also need a SMS plan, but it’s one of my favorite apps. But, I’m really disappointed that Google didn’t make hangouts send and receive texts if the user wasn’t on hangouts….sad…..
Google didn’t own the previous version of Maps on iOS, Apple did and Apple licensed Google services to run the app, same with YouTube. Now Apple has stopped licensing, freeing Google to develop their own apps and iOS is better for it. You shouldn’t blame Google for Apple’s maps and YouTube lacking previously, I doubt Apple would have let them compete directly under the license.
