I love that people can’t see that you’re online or not on Hangouts. This annoys me to no end on Whatsapp. I can’t text one person and ignore others without them messaging asking me why I’m not replying to them. That said, not a single person I know uses Hangouts for messaging. However, we do video calls and slowly, my friends are leaving Skype for this. I don’t mind my friends not using Hangouts for texting because to me, Whatsapp is faster, smoother and opens up with no delay whereas Hangouts lags ever so slightly on my GNex.

I’m not one to care about benchmarks either but the S4 does stutter at even swiping through homescreens and it hesitates at opening up the simple of apps. Maybe it’s just something wrong with my friend’s device though.

Are you talking about battery drainage? Cause that’s a different story but I’ve never seen a N4 lag. Especially in games, it’s pretty smooth.
