Yes it’s true Josh was only reporting on info that was told to him by Apple PR, but I think the criticism was due to Josh penning an entire article extremely critical of Apple’s iCloud strategy based not an an official announcement but by a conversation with one Apple employee, particularly given Apple’s penchant for secrecy and the desire to focus on iCloud, the new service, not the “Mobileme-under-a-new-name” web apps.
It made little sense that the MobileMe transition would involve removing the web apps entirely, and that’s why so many sites like Daring Fireball, TUAW, MacRumors etc. (not to mention ThisIsMyNext commenters!) criticized Josh for jumping the gun despite no evidence that they would be returning other than basic common sense.
It would have been more rational to adopt a wait-and-see approach, particularly given the unlikely notion that the MobileMe-to-iCloud transition would involve dropping web apps entirely and especially considering that web-access to “Find My iPhone” was particularly important.
Not to mention that those running the iOS5 beta were already seeing familiar MobileMe web apps like Calendar with iCloud branding on the iCloud.com domain the very same day Josh posted his article.
