I agree totally. Something smells fishy here… somewhere along the line, someone got cold feet. Microsoft is receiving no financial benefit (or so they claim) by implementing DRM. So why risk their position so much for it? Seems to me the developers probably required them to do it. If I were a betting man I’d say that they probably said the same thing to Sony who then balked when they saw an opportunity to steal a march on MS when the DRM can of worms got opened last month.
If neither side backs down, I would expect MS to demand something in return from the developers for lost market position, like a larger cut of game sales or even lower MSRP for titles. Doesn’t pass the smell test imho.
And thank God! I’ve been begging for Microsoft to integrate their varios LoB for years. Media Center was ok, but Xbox One finally seems to be the real deal. Brings a tear to the eye of this old HTPC builder.
I wonder if developers will charge more for PS4 versions of games due to the lack of a DRM system? With DRM they’re guaranteed revenue for used copies if they wish. With Sony they get zero $$.
I think either of those scenarios is possible. It’s also possible we will see different price points for the same game on each system. Developers may very well charge more for the PS4 versions because of the lack of DRM in place.
Agreed. I will get the One as well because my kids love Kinect, but Microsoft is backed into a corner here and it’s their own doing, I don’t feel sorry for them.
