Yeah they do use an open source compiler LLVM they have no choice but to release the source to it as it was originally released under an open source license. The project was not started by Apple although they are the main contributor.
I wasn’t saying ASP.NET was for desktop development just pointing out that is one of many large open source initiatives at Microsoft.

Very uninformed, Microsoft releases far more open source than apple, ASP.NET MVC for example which is a big project along with all these:
http://www.microsoft.com/opensource/directory.aspx
Apple is forced into open sourcing certain amounts of its code due to it being based on unix and bsd code under GPLv2. They also don’t update certain parts of their code base to avoid any GPLv3 licensing which would mean less patent litigation and mean they couldn’t lock their hardware down so tight:

I don’t know if you have used windows 8 CP but your search is of similar to that so hopefully is coming in WP8. Basically windows 8 has app contracts which allow apps to say they provide certain abilities that can be hooked into the OS e.g. search, file sharing, contacts…
So for the search contract an app tells the OS it provides search. I start a search in metro by default in windows it searches programs but listed down the right are all the programs I can search in instead. So I could search a weather program for a cities weather just by typing the name and selecting the app, search your contacts the same. All apps can be pinned/unpinned/hidden it works great:

I think WP8 will follow this but will add contracts for messaging and calls so apps like kik or whats app just work inside the messaging app rather than standalone as an alternate way of sending messages and skype or other voip can be called direct from the contacts.

Can’t say i’m surprised I have a lumia 800 and love it but would find it difficult to push someone to use it over an iPhone or Android. The core reason being apps, currently they are either not available or take a long time after the iPhone/android equivalents. This is a catch 22 for Microsoft as to get lots of developers they need lots of users but to get those users they need lots of apps.
Hopefully this will change with the combination of higher numbers due to Nokia and WP8/Windows 8 releases.

Looks nicer than the pebble but the watch is very limited past being a watch as far as I can see. You only get alerts that you have a message, email, missed call…. You can’t actually view them on screen or anything like that so still have to pull your phone out to read them. It would be difficult to add some of what the pebble was showing off too such as viewing what music you have playing, using it as a speedometer with your phones gps…..

Worse than that its 25 times revenue roughly. Earnings (Net Income) is less than a billiona year so more like 100 times earnings (net income).

I have seen quite a lot of curved roofed trailers in the UK in the last year or two. They increase efficiency by about 10% while actually increasing the capacity inside. I don’t think it is too difficult to manufacture trailers like this with just one curved side to deal with.

But if its selling in Tesco its sat alongside the Kindle has much more brand recognition in the UK. Its a tough sell where as I think its a little easier to directly target book lovers in bookshops where a demo unit can be setup.

It does do that, nothing to do with google maps the car just happens to have google maps too. It lights corners based on speed, steering wheel direction and actual direction (in case you are skidding I guess).

I think app contracts are intended to replace app hubs in the long run. Don’t think there are appropriate contracts to cover everything needed yet though. That would mean anyone could build an app that acts like a hub rather than the fixed ones in Windows Phone.

Or high res monitors. I have a HD 6970 running a 2560 × 1440 and 1920x 1080 monitor and framerates are still great on modern games.

Until next gen consoles come out to push the graphics boundaries most games won’t need this kind of power unless you are using multiple monitors.

True for actual tablets but convertibles look like they may be popular too.
I can also see down the road that tablets will be fast enough for most to just put in a thunderbolt dock or similar turing it into a desktop with a connected monitor, keyboard, mouse when that is a better way to work.

I think Windows RT is a too obscure name. They would have been better calling it Windows metro, Windows on ARM or something similar in my opinion.

I don’t see having multiple marketplaces on the same device happening. I think it is just a way of giving manufacturers a bit of brand recognition and allowing them to promote their exclusive apps. Hopefully exclusive apps are mostly time limited.

I think the science is sound, we have had it demonstrated with large volcanic eruptions. I can’t say its something we should do though because it takes away the effort to stop using all our natural resources so rapidly.
I think we should be looking into thrium reactors and investing in other alternative energy systems.

The office integration has always been really good but until it got the fully integrated windows client (where it just appears in explorer) I didn’t use it all that much. Now that is available i’m using it all the time between work and home.
