I babble a lot about open source software, programming, Ubuntu, design and the web. I like photography and video games.
When I grow up, I want to be a pirate.

How are you losing real estate? That extra screen space is filling an area on the device generally taken by buttons, and if the absurdly large screens on Android devices these days is any indication, manufacturers have no problem adding screen space. In cases where screen space is really an issue, those buttons are hidden and you get an extra 10 millimetres or so for free.
I’m not terribly upset about this because I don’t care about this phone anyway, but I am concerned that Samsung’s software changes will trickle through to app developers, resulting in a lot of apps that ignore the design guidelines.

Not even close to the same feature. Firefox has a “smart keywords” feature, which you need to set up manually by making special bookmarks and setting keywords yourself. (Usually right click a search field and choose “Add a keyword for this search”). The feature has nothing to do with the OpenSearch plugins used for Firefox’s search box. (Though there are some Firefox extensions that make the address bar use those).
You’re right that Chrome’s omnibar lets you search by typing a keywords and a search query, but it’s very different. For one thing, it’s constantly adding search engines. When you use a search field, Chrome remembers it. You don’t have to add that search engine yourself. This is useful. For example, I can search StackOverflow by typing stackoverflow.com + Tab, and that feature just kind of appears when I want it. I didn’t need to do anything to get it there. The browser just happened to go “hey, maybe you’d like to do a search?” when I was typing the URL.
Also, it autocompletes search keywords. I don’t actually have to type stackoverflow.com. I just type stack and it figures out the rest.
On a related note, it’s also a lot easier to edit Chrome’s list of search engines: chrome://settings/searchEngines
So, to your ill-informed claim: no.

Err, that’s ‘locked to some narrow range of platforms.’

Wouldn’t it be better if they remained independent, so this product didn’t end up locked to some narrow range of products with everyone else ignoring them out of dogma?

Hey, any chance of an article about the patent? It would help with the usual assortment of people who think the most important part of a patent is its title, and it would be educational! (I, for one, can’t quite grasp what the patent is about. It sounds like something pretty common, and that’s probably because I’m too lazy to read the details).

‘Ads on Diaspora’ is a little more than that. The service is distributed, which means you can be a part of the Diaspora network through any provider you want. Probably just getdiaspora.com until it grows, but there are certainly other options. While one provider might be ad-supported, you will be able to find one that isn’t.
