This has to be one of the nicest apps I’ve ever seen. The animations make me giddy just looking at them.

Well guess what. Some ads do really work. On Youtube, I am sometimes forced to watch a video before the actual video I wanted to see. This has shown me games that I had not heard of, but really made me interested in them (ie. RIFT). Also, an ad I saw on Facebook was for a web site that sells powerful lasers, and I intend to buy from them. Was is not for the ad, I would’ve never though to check those out.
You do have some valid points; companies need to put more research into what ads actually work, because most suck. But sometimes ads really help. Because of all the Lumia 800 (yes, 800) ads currently in my country, a lot of my friends are interested in buying one, and two actually did.
I guess we can agree that most ads suck and probably aren’t doing their high cost justice by far. But I think you need to realize that some ads actually make people want stuff. I mean, people would have barely even heard of the Lumia phones over here, were it not for a massive ad campaign.
Oh, ads also let me know System of a Down existed when I was a kid. Thank God for that.

Okay, in case you missed it; the pic I posted shows 17k people claimed an offer. All these people probably didn’t make the retailer any money, but they probably got some costumers who are going to remember “nelly.com” and come back later to check because they have nice clothes.
Nelly.com, and other sites/companies who promote their brands are living proof that it doesn’t have to always be a scam. I know plenty of girls who shop there, and they would not have heard of it, was it not for Nelly, com spamming commercial breaks with ads.
And then there’s Apple. They have brilliant ads, and people buy their stuff. Need I say more? You’re not going to tell me it doesn’t help them at all?
A quote I read from some business book: A good product that isn’t advertised is like a guy waving at a pretty girl in the dark (paraphrased).

If nobody clicked on ads, they would actually have a problem. And to prove you wrong:

If I could only tell sites what ads I wanted. Oh well.

No matter what actually happens behind the scenes, it seems really petty to turn off ads for a site you read every day. I have them on, in hopes of a good ad. And like I said, I click on ads that I don’t care for sometimes just to support sites I use regularly.
I would love to pay something to use The Verge a month though, and not have ads.

… which helps sell ads.

I click on ads sometimes just to support sites I love. And Facebook has given me many good ads that I’ve clicked on.
And The Verge, like any other site, has stats over how many times an ad is shown, I would guess.

Are you kidding? Whenever I stumble into someone’s profile that is not a Timeline a cringe a bit. Timeline just feels so much better to me.
