A bit hypothetical here but whatever.
Do you think a good aftermarket back could make the phone better? Either some sort of textured back like the SII (which I like) or a metal back. Would those sort of ideas ruin the design of the phone.

Is the centre button good, does it have a satisfying click to it or is it squidgy?

I don’t think it would require too much complexity. The SGS2 has a USB connector that does audio, video, charging and all sorts of other things like modem etc. It also does analogue audio and video through 3.5mm jack. I’m sure Apple could make USB do analogue audio if they wanted to as well.
On the SGS2 the phones USB detection is done via resistance values which let the phone know what signal to output so multiple uses over USB are not uncommon. The G1 had USB headphones!
I hope next gen phones go with micro USB 3.0 but the connector is really quite ugly, but function over form I guess.
