Because due to the inadequacies of parents school are responsible for pretty much the entirety of their students lives. Disruption at home = disruption at school.

Schools (at least in the UK) are pretty much required to care about what goes on outside of school.

tbh from my experience if you don’t ask students are more willing to tell you stuff. If they think YOU want to take an interest they will shut you out, but if THEY want you to take an interest they are far more open.

Often even when it is extreme stuff no amount of asking will get them to talk, you just have to be open when they do.

Also apparently 1 in 4 teachers in the UK have been cyber bullied by students… WHY. THE. FUCK. ARE. YOU. FRIENDS. WITH. YOUR. STUDENTS. ON. FACEBOOK.
