I think they made it so if you want to send a message you would just send it and the person will get it when they get it, just like SMC or some other messengers. They want it to be message service, not chat service.

They will probably base it on XMPP, I would think they want secure connection since it’s sensitive information as well as audit trail. Also, they probably don’t want open standard since they want to control it.
Don’t know how much of audit/security is there in XMPP, if enough the reason is most likely to have control over it.

I don’t care much about SMS since I hardly use it (only when someone sends me a message), but I am disappointed at them not having more platforms covered – chat only works when all your friends can be on it, otherwise you’ll just use another client that works everywhere. I hoped for interoperability too, but doesn’t look like it’s going to happen, that’s ok though because usually those apps are not the best and serve to lowest common denominator

Exactly, here is what happened:
DHS absorbed the Immigration and Naturalization Service and assumed its duties. In doing so, it divided the enforcement and services functions into two separate and new agencies: Immigration and Customs Enforcement and Citizenship and Immigration Services. The investigative divisions and intelligence gathering units of the INS and Customs Service were merged forming Homeland Security Investigations. Additionally, the border enforcement functions of the INS, including the U.S. Border Patrol, the U.S. Customs Service, and the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service were consolidated into a new agency under DHS: U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The Federal Protective Service falls under the National Protection and Programs Directorate.

that’s the only way they’ll make money on BBM, otherwise why even try if it’s free?

it was at the time one of the only ones that had guaranteed delivery, but not anymore, there are more like that. It also showed when the message arrived, others are capable of it too now.

Not anymore, WhatsApp is pretty similar, has confirmation of received message, group chat, voice, video, audio, location or contact attachment. And it’s pretty reliable and on almost all platforms (no PC unfortunately and only one per device).
It’s very capable app, I like it a lot, the only thing is it’s not free (they say they are going to charge me, but that so far didn’t happen, don’t know why).

I hope it would be phone number based + ability to have your own unique id, so you can move between devices.
I also hope there is going to be a PC client.
Google will probably come out with it’s own messaging app tomorrow that will unite all of it’s multitude of messaging apps and it will finally become a contender in this space.

I don’t think they will – channels is the way BlackBerry plans to earn money. They want to be like Twitter, it looks like channels offers similar functionality (without 160 characters limit)

Well, looks like they found a way to get money from BBM – with channels, which makes it like twitter, so brands and celebrities can do their things on BBM.
I don’t think they knew how to do it before, they didn’t want to charge people for BBM, so they didn’t move to other platforms.

I still think it could be pretty good – it’s free and it’s an awesome messenger, I really liked it on BBM. We need to see how the implementation will be on iOS and Android, but on BlackBerry it was awesome.

I think it’s great – they found a way to monetize (with channels, making BBM akin to Twitter) and expand to other platforms, it looks like messaging becomes really competitive, WhatsApp, Skype, and others will have a big competition on mobile.

Camera shutter release button for taking self images? Could be handy, it’s tough to aim on the screen when you don’t see it.

Usually to grow biomass effectively you need fertilizer which requires natural gas :)
And you would need fields where would you get those and why fields with biomass (instead of woods/grasses) are better then mining?

It’s not complete access, it’s just info about last time you logged in. They thought it’s safe to share, but as you see you could deduce some things from it which people don’t want to share – like if a person left or somewhere not in front of the computer.
This could potentially affect traders.
