Part of the problem is the arbitrarily low “average” numbers that forecasters use. The actual average of named storms is closer to 16/yr-
In any case, it really is more about storms that make landfall and not just named storms…we have had 19 named storms each year over the last 3 years but only a handful have made landfall.
Next up someone will be tying AGW…

He pointed to his push for the media shield law that he ultimately killed in Congress???

I don’t consider speculation a legitimate business transaction, which is not to say it is illegal but it is trading money for money, its an exchange and not a purchase. You don’t include USD FX transactions in GDP for example.
I would love to see hard numbers related to transactions other than speculation as well…maybe that is something The Verge should research.

I work right next to Zucotti, I saw OWS every day. I watched them protest up and down Church street, Wall Street, and in front of local branch offices of banks where not one “fat cat” actually worked. The guy across the hall from my apartment had a huge OWS banner on his door and went down and cooked for the masses before returning to his fairly expensive NYC 2 Bedroom, and I asked him why he was getting involved, and I asked others randomly that got in my way as I tried to make my way to the office. The almost universal answer I received was always along the line of "f*** the man and we need to show them and yada yada. Not one actual idea came out of OWS that has any legs at all, no one from OWS went on to run for office, not one member made a coherent argument or proposal for change.
They were not revolutionaries. Which is why the entire movement vanished as soon as they faced any actual resistance.

Like Bitcoin, Occupy Wall Street attracted many fringe elements, but its core organizers were clear-headed revolutionaries.
OWS was not run by clear-headed revolutionaries. A revolutionary has a goal, an agenda, a manifesto. OWS had nothing other than protest protest protest. No new ideas, not even re-hashing any old ones. I see that you mentioned that a handful of them were good at organizing a campsite…but that does not make them clear headed revolutionaries. Good hippies maybe.
This is a fair piece on Bitcoin but IMHO doesn’t adequately address the legal and regulatory hurdles that BC faces in the future if they ever want to actually be used for something other than purchasing drugs. You note that Silk Road has grown 36 x since BC adoption and then tag on that legitimate business are reporting “multi-million dollar volumes”. That bottom line is that the VAST majority of BC spending is done through Silk Road or its shady cousins, and the small piece of the pie that is taken up by “legitimate” business is mostly laundering that same money.

Blackberry should just get out of the hardware business and place their robust, fully fleshed out enterprise messaging systems in all 3 major mobile operating systems as a secure app. They could still provide the same tools for IT departments to tinker with and finally allow more cautious companies to roll out iPhones, Android, and Win8 platforms.
That’s their only viable long term strategic play…maybe this is the beginning.

I work directly across from the Freedom Tower (bah 1 WTC) and we watched them prepare the very top of the spire for almost two weeks…unlike the majority of the spire which does look just like an antenna, the top is shaped almost like a bullet, and there is room inside it for a person or two (I assume to replace light bulbs and such).
Watching it rise up with an American flag flying on it, our entire office was crowding the windows and cheering…very awesome and humbling experience.

Guns are just the latest 3D printing craze. Widespread 3-D printing is essentially the replicator from Star Trek. What happens to existing business models when you can print an entire finished good in your home? There are already people printing exact replicas of casino chips. What about actual coinage?
The only thing holding back 3D printing at this point is the challenge of getting raw materials other than metals and plastics into the process…once they figure out how to process raw food materials (i.e. soy paste or something), things will REALLY change.

You can also find a drug dealer online and meet with him face to face to purchase illegal drugs.
Or just pay him with Bitcoin like everyone else.
What’s your point?

Ironic, considering that the only way that many people in NYC SOPO in the week after the storm could only communicate via copper land lines and pay phones. Wireless was completely worthless.

Eh, the rental process may be annoying, but you only have to deal with it on a limited basis when moving. Living in NYC is fantastic and a very high quality of life. It’s not for everybody, but if you like city-life, you can’t beat it.

Trust me, living in NYC today is FAR better than it was in the 70s, 80s, and early 90s. I’ve lived here all my life.
I can’t believe people are romanticizing about that time frame.
